Mason’s Wills weighing college options

Mason High junior Zach Wills is still more than a year away from joining a Division I cross country and track program.

But the three schools at the top of Wills’ list are Oregon, Stanford and Oklahoma State, Mason boys track coach Chip Dobson said.

Other schools, like Duke, Wisconsin and Georgetown, are also in the picture.

As a sophomore last spring, Wills won his second straight championship in the 3,200-meter race with a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record time of 9 minutes, 2.90 seconds. Then in the fall, Wills defended his D-I state cross country crown with a time of 15:45.11 at Scioto Downs.

Dobson also said senior Matt Kahl’s top three schools are Northern Kentucky, Butler and Kent State.

(Update, 9:35 p.m.) Wills did indeed say those three schools are at the top of his wish list, but he is no where close to making a decision.

In fact, he said he probably won’t announce his college choice until this time next year.

“Everyone’s still in the running right now,” Wills said. “Nothing’s official right now. There’s a wide range (of schools), but every runner wants to go to all those (three) schools. It’s a dream.”
