Defending state champs out of D-III girls tournament
The defending Division III state girls basketball champion has been disqualified from the tournament by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The South Euclid Regina Royals, favorites to win their seventh state title next week, have been ousted for using an ineligble player in a sectional tournament game last month.
Regina defeated Elyria Catholic 68-45 on Wednesday in the regional semifinals, but was removed from the tourney on Thursday. Elyria Catholic will play Smithville on Saturday for the regional title.
Madison plays Versailles at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Springfield in the regional finals. The winner advances to Ironton or Oak Hill in the state semifinals at 1 p.m. March 18 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
