Lakota West boys basketball roster, scrimmage schedule
Although he hasn’t put together the official varsity roster yet, first-year Lakota West High boys basketball coach Sean Van Winkle has an idea of who will dress with the big club.
They are: seniors Obi Nwankwo, Robert Cartwright, John Peters, Jordan Hicks, Jordan Griffin, Brian Straus, Alex Smith and Matt Stafford; and juniors Dylan Romero, Phil Cook, Matt Fox and Korey Ward.
The Firebirds will host a six-team scrimmage on Saturday, Nov. 21, with Ross, Bethel-Tate, Madison, Centerville and Withrow.
Then on Wednesday, Nov. 25, West travels up to UD Arena to scrimmage Moeller and Dublin Coffman. The Firebirds finish up the preseason hosting Lebanon, Taft and Dayton Dunbar on Saturday, Nov. 28.

College options for Mason’s Melnick
Mason High senior Hilliary Melnick is a two-sport standout in volleyball and basketball.
In volleyball, Melnick was the GMC’s top setter with 677 assists, while on the hardwood, the 5-foot-8 guard is the Comets’ best 3-pointer shooter.
That’s led her to receive college attention for both sports.
John Carroll University, North Central College, Marietta College, Lynchburg College and Wittenberg University have all shown interest in Melnick in either one or both sports. She also has visited Bellarmine University.

Lakota West’s Cox weighs in on Bailie’s resignation
With Greg Bailie resigning as head football coach at Lakota East on Tuesday, Nov. 17, that leaves Lakota West’s Larry Cox as the longest-tenured coach in the Greater Miami Conference.
Bailie came to Lakota in 1993 and took over the East program in ‘97 when the school split into East and West. Cox has been at West since the school’s inception.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for Greg,” Cox said. “Greg ran a clean program. His teams were always fundamentally sound. You were going to have to beat them to win the game. They weren’t going to give you anything. I felt like he was definitely a respected opponent.”
