Lakota East loses, Mason wins in D-I girls volleyball district finals

The Lakota East and Mason girls volleyball teams played in Division I district final matches tonight, Oct. 31, at Lebanon High School, and both were involved in thrilling five-game matches.

The Thunderhawks lost to Harrison, while the Comets defeated Seton for their first D-I district title in program history.

Harrison and Mason will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Vandalia Butler in the regional semifinals.

Middies win!

The final score from Princeton is Middletown 49, Princeton 28.

The Middies have qualified for the Division I, Region 4 playoffs for the first time in 18 years.

They’ll know more later tonight about who they play next Saturday.

Unofficially,if East St. Louis (Ill.) wins its game today, Middletown will be seventh in the region and play the loser of the Moeller-St. Xavier game. If East St. Louis loses, the Middies will finish eighth and play the winner.

Official pairings will be announced Sunday afternoon.

Gates an offensive machine

Gates has run the ball twice for 156 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 96-yard kick return for a touchdown.

Gates does it one more time

Jerry Gates runs 76 yards for his third touchdown of the game and Middletown has increased its lead to 42-21 with the extra point kick by Ryan Till.

At the end of the third quarter, Middletown leads Princeton 35-21.

Watkins extends Middies lead

Caleb Watkins burst throough the line and ran 51 yards to the end zone with 55 seconds left in the third quarter to extend Middletown’s lead to 35-21.

Gates does it again

After Princeton was forced to punt, Jerry Gates took the first play from scrimmage and ran 80 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was good and the Middies are back in front 28-21 with 3:10 left in the third.

Gates takes matters into his own hands

Jerry Gates showed why he is so dangerous by taking the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. Caleb Watkins pass to Kevin Watts for the 2-point conversion and this game is tied 21-21 with 4:30 left in the third period.

Princeton scores again

Speencer Ware powered his way into the end zone for his third touchdown of the game, and the Vikings lead 21-13 with 4:44 left in the third quarter.

High snap gives Princeton great field position

Middletown lined up to punt from the 38, but a high snap went over Kyle Schwarber’s head and he fell on it at the 2 setting the Vikings up with first and goal with 5:55 left in 3rd period

Antonio Banks ran middle then left and into the end zone 38 yards, but the PAT was blocked and the Middies still trail Princeton 14-13 with 10:45 to go in the third quarter.

Middletown rushed on 4th down

To clarify, Middletown was at the 2 yard line faciing a fourth down with no timeouts left, so they could not stop the clock.

The offense hurried, but could not convert and turned the ball over to Princeton with 8 seconds to go.

We’re about to get started here at Princeton as Middletown is in a must-win situation.

By virtue of last night’s results in other Division I, Region 4 games, if the Middies win today, they will qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 1990.

Shuck: Middletown area could have four playoff teams

The Middletown area will have at least three teams and possibly four in the prep football playoffs, according to Shuck’s Projections publisher Steve Shuck.

After Friday night’s action, here are the local first-round matchups next weekend:

DIVISION III, REGION 12 Monroe (No. 6 seed) at Dayton Chaminade Julienne (3) on Friday

DIVISION IV, REGION 16 Valley View (5) at Kenton (4) and Carlisle (6) at North College Hill (3) on Saturday

Also, Middletown can join the Division I, Region 4 field with a victory at Princeton on Saturday afternoon. If the Middies win and East St. Louis (Ill.) wins Saturday, Middletown will finish seventh in the region and visit the St. Xavier-Moeller loser on Saturday. If the Middies win and East St. Louis loses, Middletown will finish eighth and visit the St. Xavier-Moeller winner on Saturday. If the Middies lose, their season will be over and Colerain will be the No. 8 seed.
