Ohio House passes map with new U.S. House districts

The Ohio House on Thursday voted 56-36 for a map with 16 new U.S. House districts.

House Bill 319 now goes to the Senate.

The vote was largely along partisan lines, with Republicans in support and Democrats again.

Earlier Thursday, Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern said if the map if approved and signed into law by Gov. John Kasich that Democrats might mount a campaign to put the bill to a referendum in November 2012.

Five Republicans voted “no” and three Democrats, all black voted “yes.”

Rep. John Barnes, Jr., D-Cleveland, one of those “yes” votes, said he supported the map because it keeps a black majority district. The current black majority district is within Cuyahoga County; the new one will extend south to Summit County.

Three of the five Republicans who voted “no” represent Dayton-Springfield area districts - Reps. Ross McGregor of Springfield, Jarrod Martin of Beavercreek and Robert Hackett of London.

The Ohio Campaign for Accountable Redistricting said the new map would create 12 districts favoring Republicans and four favoring Democrats.

Democrats of course, have never drawn Congressional districts to favor themselves when they had the opportunity. As usual they cannot take what they have and will dish out if given the chance. Hypocrites.
