Ohio House committee OKs plan for 16 new U.S. House districts

On a party line vote, a House committee on Wednesday approved a map creating 16 new U.S. House districts, including one in the Dayton-area that could see a 2012 primary between U.S. Reps. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, and Steve Austria, R-Beavercreek.

The full House is expected to vote Thursday on the plan, said Rep. Matt Huffman, R-Lima, chairman of the State Government and Elections Committee.

In the 14-5 vote, all Republicans voted “yes” and all Democrats “no.”

Democrats complained that there needed to be more time for public input on a map that was just unveiled Tuesday. Huffman and Republicans said there were public hearings during the summer to get input for the new map.

An analysis by the Ohio Campaign for the Ohio Campaign for Accountable Redistricting found that 12 of the new districts would favor Republicans and four would favor Democrats.

The analysis was based on a political index using the results from the 2008 presidential race and the 2010 races for governor, auditor and secretary of state.
