U.S. Reps. Turner, Austria react to new U.S. House districts
U.S. Reps. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, and Steve Austria, R-Beavercreek, reacted to the proposed new U.S. House districts unveiled by Ohio House Republicans on Tuesday, Washington correspondent Jessica Wehrman reports.
Turner and Austria would both be in the new 10th District.
Here’s Wehrman’s report from Turner:
Turner said he was confident in his record.
Still, he said he opposed reducing the congressional representation of the Miami Valley and Wright-Patterson Air Force, saying it would “reduce our impact” with the Department of Defense.
“We have less focus,” he said. “But I am certain that with the importance of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the entire Ohio delegation will continue to be a team in support of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and I look forward to continue being a leader in that.”
The new map takes Turner’s district out of the Cincinnati media market and puts him in the Columbus media market, with part of his district in Pickaway and Fairfield counties. But Montgomery County, he said, “remains the anchor.”
“I’m very committed to working to continue to serve southwest Ohio and to grow our economy,” he said.
Here’s Wehrman’s report from Austria:
Austria said he represents four of the five counties in the new district.
He said Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the largest single-site employer in the state, will be a priority for the new district, which would include all or parts of Montgomery, Greene, Fayette, Pickaway and Fairfield counties.
The base, he said, “has a huge economic impact on our area, and it’s vital to the national defense of our country. I’ll continue to provide strong leadership in Congress for the base and the communities around the district.”
“It’s extremely important that we have strong representation at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,” he said. “One of the things I will continue to advocate for is for the entire delegation to represent Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and bring in new missions and projects and keep the missions and projects and jobs we currently have at Wright-Patterson.”

As a disable Vet, I’m concerned that WPAFB is well represented in Congress, but what really chaps my wheelchair is every time I go to the Greene County Court House to file paperwork, the same black Honda is sitting in the two-hour handicap parking space - all day long - and it never gets ticketed. They must have selective enforcement of parking violations in Greene County or maybe one of the judges is parking there. Who knows?
