UPDATE: Kasich to allow cameras and audio recorders in press conference on state budget

UPDATE: Gov. John Kasich’s administration quickly stepped back from an attempt to ban TV cameras and broadcast audio recording equipment from a press conference on his state budget plan.

The ban drew immediate protests from the Statehouse press corps, the ACLU of Ohio and Ohio Democratic Party.

Kasich press secretary Rob Nichols announced late Monday afternoon that, indeed, reporters would be allowed to videotape, photograph and record the governor’s 1 p.m. press conference. Earlier in the day they were told they could bring pens and notebooks and small recorders only for accuracy purposes.

The press conference will be the first look at the closely guarded details of how Kasich plans to fund K-12 education, colleges and universities, the prison system, Ohio Medicaid and other state and local government services.

Kasich is expected to hold a televised ‘town hall’ meeting at 6 p.m. on the budget plan.

Kasich has discounted the importance of transparency laws in government. Initially, he planned to be sworn in at his private home, out of the media eye; he has said open records laws dissuade good candidates from applying for government jobs; and he reorganized the state’s job development functions to be run by a private, non-profit organization that will not be subject to the same open meetings and public records laws.

March 13-19 is Sunshine Week, which is a national initiative to promote discussion on the importance of open government and freedom of information.

ACLU of Ohio Executive Director Christine Link denounced Kasich’s now defunct plan to ban cameras and recorders, saying, “Gov. Kasich has decided to celebrate Sunshine Week by shrouding his budget announcement in unprecedented secrecy. The public deserves better.”

Koch brothers Create Jobs., they hire tens of thousands of employees, pay salaries, pay healthcare for their employees, contribute to 401K’s, and they donate a ton of money to charities. I have no problem whatsoever with Koch brothers. Last I checked, that’s exactly what Ohio’s looking for…JOBS.

Judi, you mean like Obama follows orders from Soros? You are a hypocrisy-embracing one trick pony who no longer resides in Ohio. Just one more reason why the future of Ohio is brighter than it has been for decades.

By Democrast question the Gov.

Questions to be asked of Gov. Kasich by Democrats: “Why does a round pizza come in a square box?” “What disease did cured ham actually have?” Why is “bra” singular, and “panties” plural? “How is it that we put a man on the Moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?” “Why do Democrats pay to go up in tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?” Governor, is it true that after you put a deposit down on a brand new Porsche and mentioned it on Facebook, saying: “I can’t wait for the new 911 to arrive!”…the next thing you knew is that 4000 Muslims added you as a friend? Is it true that the Red Cross knocked on your door asking if you could help towards the flooding from tsunami’s in Japan, and you said you’d “love to, but my garden hose only reaches to the bottom of my driveway”? These…and many more questions, will be asked of our newly elected Gov. See/hear/live his responses!!!!1

Transparency? That’s what OBAMA and Democrats “promised”, but failed to deliver, right?! Remember Nancy “you have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it” Pelosi? Why is it important for people to watch the swearing-in ceremony for Kasich? What do you think he’s going to hide from us?! Give me a break.

In a follow-up announcement, Kasich’s press secretary informed the press that the Governor would hold an open question-and-answer session on Friday, March 18. Reporters would be permitted to listen to answers but would not be allowed to ask questions.
