Portman, Strickland campaigns win praise from Washington Post’s politics watcher
Republican Rob Portman was a big winner and Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland was a loser but both ran great campaigns - according to the “The Fix” , Chris Cillizza’s politics blog on washingtonpost.com.
Cillizza declared Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s successful effort to retain his Nevada U.S. Senate seat against Republican Sharron Angle as the “Best 2010 Campaign” and listed Portmans’ big win in Ohio’s U.S. Senate race over Democratic Gov. Lee Fisher and Strickland’s loss to Republican challenger John Kasich as runners up.
Strickland was the only loser named.
“Why?,” Cillizza wrote. “Because faced with a stalled economy and a national wave cresting on his party, Strickland managed to hang tough for the entirety of this campaign against Rep. John Kasich”
Portman, meanwhile, carried lots of baggage into the race as a former top aide to President George W. Bush but overcame it all, Cillizza said.
Portman “did, literally, everything right: he outraised and outworked Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher throughout early 2009 and 2010 … By the time average people started paying attention, the race was already over.”

TweetKasich heads to San Diego for GOP governors’ meeting
Gov.-elect John Kasich will attend the Republican Governors Association meeting this week in San Diego, Rob Nichols, Kasich’s spokesman, said Monday.
Kasich plans to leave Tuesday and return late Thursday, said Nichols. The meeting runs Wednesday through Friday.
It will be an opportunity for newly elected governors to share best practices and learn how other states are dealing with challenges, said Nichols.
“It should be very beneficial,” Nichols said.
Republicans won big on Nov. 2 in governors’ races across the country. GOP candidates won governorships in a majority of 10 projected “swing states” in the 2012 presidential election, including Ohio, according to the RGA.

TweetBoehner cites teamwork, Woody Hayes in talk to new GOP lawmakers
U.S. Rep. John Boehner, R-West Chester, expected to become House Speaker next year, had some advise for incoming GOP lawmakers at a dinner Sunday in Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C., according to speech excerpts released by Boehner’s office:
Work as a team and remember what Woody Hayes, the late Ohio State football coach, used to say.
“Everyone has a talent. Everyone has a place,” said Boehner. “I’m committed to finding a place for each of you and putting you in a position to succeed.”
Don’t gloat in victory, he said, getting ready to quote Woody:
“He told his team, ‘Once we get winning, (if) anybody comes up to congratulate you, kick them in the shins, unless it’s a little old lady over 80. Pats on the back soften you.’
“I don’t recommend kicking anyone, but I do think we need to take our accomplishments in stride. That’s how I want to approach the coming year.”
