Strickland leads Kasich, poll finds

A new poll released Thursday, April 29, shows Democrat Ted Strickland holding a six-point lead over Republican challenger John Kasich in the gubernatorial election.

Registered Ohio voters favor Strickland over Kasich, 44- to 38-percent, according to a poll by Quinnipiac University. Strickland and Kasich face off in November.

Despite the modest lead, Strickland still faces challenges: only 37 percent of voters say the governor has kept campaign promises and the race is close even though 62 percent of the voters don’t know enough about Kasich to have an opinion of him, according to Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher leads Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner 41- to 24-percent, although a third of likely voters are still undecided, the poll said. The winner will go up against former Congressman Rob Portman of Cincinnati.

The poll found that both Fisher and Brunner would beat Portman, who is a former Bush White House budget director and trade representative. Fisher holds a three-point lead over Portman while Brunner holds a four-point lead.

“Ohio is upholding its reputation as a battleground state. Democrats seem to have a slight edge in the key races, but those leads are small and have gone back and forth in recent months. As has historically been the key in Ohio elections, the undecided vote — many of whom are independents — could well hold the balance of power come November,” Brown said.

The poll also found that 45 percent of Ohio voters approve of the job President Obama is doing and 44 percent say he is a better president than George W. Bush.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,568 registered Ohio voters from April 21-26. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 points.

Although I have done limited systematic research, I do know any poll can be contaminated by “leading-biased” questions and an “unbalanced-biased” control group, subject, etc… THIS IS ONE SUCH CASE! If this poll is correct, I question the sanity of all Ohio residents and it is time for me to move. Strickland has done nothing to help Ohio. Rather, he has taken Ohio to a new, depressing low of more welfare dependents, higher unemployment, more illigal immigrants, higher crime rate, HiGHER TAXES, a terrible economy and corruption. Forbes Magazine recently rated Cleveland as one of the most terrible cities to live in or visit in the US. Dayton holds the “honor” as the 5th most “deadest” or “dying” cities in the Nation. Of course, Dayton is still ranked as one of the most violent cities per captia in the US. Does anything else need to be said?

I agree- this poll does seem to be weighted. Strange coincidence that the Dems seem to be wrapping up Ohio. Fuether, I can’t believe that Ohioans would give kudos to Strickland for doing nothing save allowing Ohio jobs to depart the state. Then again, the poll seems to give kudos to President Obama for likewise costing the nation jobs and exponentially increasing taxes over the next few years. Perhaps people are blinded by their ideology or perhaps they hope that they too can lose their jobs and get some of that “Obama money” for themselves. Problem: What happens when we run out of other people’s money?

This poll is HIGHLY SUSPECT. We’ll soon find out how true it is. Most Americans support Arizona’s law; and most rational Americans know that Gov. Christie is doing the right thing for N.J., too. Unions have ruined this country, driving manufacturing away and now the states can’t afford to pay ridiculous union salaries and benefits.

The poll was taken strictly inside Cox Media - where else could they get such ridiculous results!

I will vote for whomever will support an immigration enforcement law like AZ. And that is not Strickland. If we end illegal alien benefits of all kind we will go a long way toward solving problems with education, healthcare, jobs, social services and other things. Illegal immigration is my first concern. And I’m not talking about legal immigrants. I’m talking about illegal aliens. They are not one and the same. I don’t need to tell you how many unemployed Ohiioans there are. Not to mention kids needing jobs to help pay for college.

Kevin, Yes, Kasich can be WAY more disappointing than Strickland. Look what Chris Christy is doing in New Jersey. He’s cutting education by a billion while giving a billion in tax breaks to those making 400k and up. Kasich certainly didn’t have a problem taking his bonus from Lehaman Brothers either. kasich is another Republican hack who’s only interested in helping the rich.

Where are these polls conducted? Cleveland? I don’t know one person in this part of Ohio who believes Strickland has done a job deserving of another term.

Really? People are going to vote this yahoo into office again? Mr. I’m going to fix school funding and the state budget and yada, yada, yada. What has he done? Now he has a chance to save about 400 jobs in Springfield and is doing nothing about it. He’s not fighting for anything. How many months did he spend on the campaign trail with Hillary instead of taking care of his own state? This man needs to go now, people. Please!!!

We probably voted in the same first election! Good Governor? Hard to quantify that. Rhodes and Voinovich got things done. Gilligan, oh my…I can’t type that without thinking of Mary Ann and Ginger. Still, it’s early. Strickland has recognition right now and Kasich hasn’t even started advertising. One point to make though…who did they call? Brunner beating Portman by four? Clearly, this was a name recognition drill.

I’m a life long Ohio Resident and 1st voted in 1980. In all honesty I don’t think I remember ever having what i would call a good Governor. I always vote candidate not party. And I’ve never voted for the incumbent or same candidate in subsequent elections. I will give Kasich a try. Can he really be any more disappointing than Strickland?
