Voters “confident” Obama will make right Supreme Court pick
A majority of American voters - 53 percent - are “very confident” or “somewhat confident” that President Barack Obama will make the right choice to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday, April 21.
The poll also found that voters trust the Democratic president more than Senate Republicans - 46 to 43 percent - to make the right choice for the high court. Still, voters said by a 48-41 percent margin that senators who do not agree with Obama’s pick should filibuster the president’s choice.
Obama is considering candidates to replace Justice John Paul Stevens who is retiring.
On the court pick question, 27 percent were “very confident” Obama would make the right choice and 26 percent were somewhat confident. Also, 18 percent were “not too confident” about the choice and 28 percent were “not confident at all.”
While voters showed confidence in Obama’s high court pick, they disapproved of his job performance. Forty six percent disapproved, compared to 44 percent who approved, his lowest approval rating in the poll since his inauguration last year.
Other poll findings:
*By a 49-21 percent margin, voters approved of the job Chief Justice John Roberts is doing.
*Voters approved of Obama’s earlier nomination of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the court, 52-32 percent.
*29 percent said the court was too liberal; 19 percent said it was too conservative and 40 percent said it was about right.
*By a 78-16 percent margin, voters said high court justices allow political views to enter into their decisions.
*By a 79-14 percent margin, voters disapproved January’s Supreme Court ruling lifting limits on the what corporations and unions could spend attacking and boosting political candidates.
The poll was taken from Wednesday, April 14 to Monday, April 19 with 1,930 registered voters nationwide and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

JustMe - you really haven’t done your research in your claim of deregulation. Deregulation of airlines lowered ticket prices so that most anyone could afford to travel. Check the rates out sometime before deregulation. Same with the other items you mentioned.

I am fully confident he will pick a radical anti-American activist who thinks the role of the Judicial Branch is to make up their own rules as they go along. You can count on that! Just watch and see.

Jim, you are correct. Obama certainly has turned this country around. It is now headed full speed into Marxism and away from liberty, justice, and the American way. CHANGE IT BACK!

I’m very confident I know exactly how B.O. will move in his nominating a future Supreme Court candidate. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

Everyon knows that deregulation is what killed this ecomomy. When deregulation set in, all afffected industries likely did the same kind of thing; they just didn’t get caught. I am not for any more government regulation than is necessary. That being said, take a look around…the airlines, Cable TV, phone companies, insurance companies, banking, oil…after they became “deregulated”, they began to rape and pillage the american consumer and failed to ethically police themselves. Part of the reason we are where we are today economically. So, if it takes some form of government regulation and huge fines to keep these rats in order, then so be it.

Jim: that is because you are a Liberal and Liberals don’t do facts. The Democrats and Obama himself were just as much as responsible for the economic problems due to the sub prime mortgage crisis which started it all. Obama himself led a filibuster to block regulation of Fannie mae and Fredie Mac. Of course Democrats have so little integrity they can’t take responsiblity for their part all they can do is blame Bush. Turnig our country into a socialist country is not doing things right. I can’t wait until November when all of the lying hypocrytical Democrats are voted out

If you mean by turning things around that he is taking the country down a unsustainable progressive path, then I suppose you have a point; but, as you can see by the polls, you are in a minority Jim. What happens when the stimulus money is gone at the end of this year (not that it did alot of good) and higher taxes kick in with even more anticipated in the future? As to the courts, I have no doubt he will pick a left of center justice and considering they will be replacing Stevens, no big change; but, I continue to pray daily for the good health of Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito and Kennedy while this Prez is in office. Should he be allowed to change the balance of the court, it would make the Warren court look calm.

I have no confidence in this president or this congress to do anything right, and I am a voter. I wish they would take the rest of the year off and stop screwing things up.

Scott, What specifically has Obama done wrong? IMO, he’s done a great job of turning this country around. Bush was a total disaster.

Why would anyone be confident he will do anything right. He has done nothing right yet, all he has done is do everything wrong
