FOP backs ballot plan to move Columbus casino

The Ohio Fraternal Order of Police, the state’s largest labor organization for law enforcement officers, on Wednesday, April 21, announced its support for state Issue 2 on the May 4 ballot.

Approval of the Issue would authorize changing the location of a proposed Columbus casino from the Arena District near downtown to the site of a former auto plant on the city’s west side.

“These are tough economic times for Ohio’s cities and counties,”Mark Drum, FOP-Ohio treasurer, said in a press release.

“The sooner all four Ohio casinos are underway, the sooner Ohio counties, cities and school districts will begin to see the benefits of hundreds of millions of dollars each year in casino tax revenue.”

Voters statewide last November approved a constitutional amendment authorizing casinos at specific sites in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo.

In Franklin County, which includes Columbus, the issue lost, however, and community leaders reached agreement with the casino developer on the proposed new site. The change, however, requires voter approval.

Follow the money trail. The request to move only happens after the surrounding land is already in the hands of the insiders. Vote no and leave the profiteers hanging.

listen, the arena district is hardly a family friendly fun factory. it is bars and restaurants geared towards people who don’t have kids in tow (unless the circus is in town). this is all about the dispatch and nationwide not liking that the arena vote passed. otherwise, why weren’t they involved BEFORE the thing went on the ballot. vote no. keep it downtown, just like we all voted for.

Mark Drum is nothing but a union hack. That he speaks for me as a cop is disgraceful, check out why he had to leave his job.

Gary is correct that Franklin County voted no last November. However, a ‘No’ vote in May simply moves the Columbus casino back in its original location, in walking distance from the family-friendly ‘Arena District. A ‘Yes’ vote allows construction to proceed at a much larger site on the west side of Columbus, where the economic impact can serve the community better without undue proximity to minors.

Of course the FOP supports it. They’ll get theirs regardless of where the casino is.

Remember, Franklin county voted NO, they did not want a casino. So we should respect their wishes and vote NO on Issue 2. Making this part of the state constitution is stupid. And I am guessing that FOP members will have off duty employment opportunities, which is why they support this.

Jobe, you are more likely to get robbed on the west side of Columbus than downtown. Off course, it’s still safer than Dayton.

Vote YES. Oh come on, who wants to go to downtown Columbus, go to a Casino, and get robbed. Unless it moves I won’t go and will head to Indiana like I have been doing. People voted yes before just to get them here, we don’t really care where they are located, just as long as it makes sense on the West Side.

Vote YES. It just makes sense and we need the economic activity as soon as possible.

Vote NO. The voters made their decision back in November. That decision included the precise location for these things to be built. Now, because Columbus didn’t like the decision, we have to do yet another Constitutional Amendment??? Tell your elected officials to do their dang jobs. Vote NO.
