Turner prods OMB director to reject NCR stimulus funding

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner has asked the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget to bar the federal government from spending $5 million in stimulus dollars to move NCR jobs to Georgia.

During a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Wednesday, July 8, Turner, R-Centerville, related to OMB Director Rob Nabors how NCR was moving its world headquarters from Dayton to Georgia and how Columbus, Ga., had requested $5 million in stimulus money to help renovate a building to move manufacturing jobs from South Carolina to Georgia.

“Is this an appropriate and allowable expense under stimulus guidelines?” asked Turner, who with House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, wrote a letter to President Obama in June opposing the request in June.

Nabors responded that while he didn’t have specifics on the request, the description was “disturbing.”

“This does not sound like an appropriate use of recovery dollars,” he said.

He said he would talk to his office’s general counsel about the request.

While the $5 million would not go toward physically moving jobs from Ohio to Georgia, Turner argues any use of stimulus money aimed at facilitating the consolidation of NCR World Headquarters in Georgia is inappropriate. He said the expenditure would be the equivalent of using federal dollars to buy jobs away from other states, and “violates the spirit of the law.”

That 5 mil needs to be redirected to the Dayton area to stimulate this areas economy. The Dayton area needs all the help it can get right now to get new businesses to move or expand here

Whatever, You must have a short memory. McLin was elected mayor in 2001 by defeating Mike Turner. I would consider him a formidable candidate.

McLin won because there were no other formidable candidates qualified to run against her. We need to find someone to challenge her that has strong leadership skills, a record of ethics and integrity and the cohones to take a stand and make a difference. Now which one of you is gonna do it?

Anyone who DOESN’T see the connection between Dayton’s problems and our current mayor/commission is either delusional or pushing some hidden agenda. Look around you! Columbus & Cincy have new construction & jobs in spite of the economy. Clueless, you are doing Dayton a disservice by trying to act as if everything is fine here

Clueless: Your name suits you. If you did your research McLin won because she had the west and the east sides vote. Blacks weren’t the only ones who voted for McLin that year or during the last election.

I’ll give Turner credit for giving NCR a parting shot. Now, it’s time for Bohener to get on board with this. I think Obama would also oppose stimulus money being spent to transfer jobs.

I usually don’t agree with Mike Turner but I absolutely agree with him on this. Of course, it’s getting him some good press also.

I can’t believe stimulus was going for jobs moving from one state to another, but way to go Turner trying to right the wrongs of government!

Glad the man is doing his best to take care of this community, wish we had commissioners like him at the helm of the City of Dayton!

I applaud Rep. Turner for standing up for what is right. States should not be permitted to use stimulus money to lure or pay for companies to leave a fellow state. Shame on the state government of Georgia for requesting this use of the money to do this very thing. Rep. Turner, I am confident you have Dayton’s and Ohio’s best interest at heart. Thank you for doing your job and representing us.

If $5 million in stimulus money does get spent, it should be spent to keep NCR in Dayton!

The $5 million certainly is not stimulating Dayton’s economy. GO, TURNER!

By NCR should pay for Enviro clean

And like wise, no taxpayer dollars should go into cleaning up NCR’s rape of the Environment…namely soil and groundwater, in our precious aquifer!
