Mike Turner’s constitutional amendment

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner wants to amend the constitution to keep the United States government from owning stock in corporations.

Turner is the lead co-sponsor of “Preserving Capitalism in America” amendment in the U.S. House of Representatives, which so far has 102 cosponsors.

He said the federal government has reached beyond the original intent of lawmakers, particularly with the Troubled Asset Relief Program, and cites government intervention into GM as an example.   “;A majority of Americans oppose the government take-over of the auto manufacturers and want the government out as soon as possible,” Turner said.  “Just as troubling as the government’s rapid control over private industry, is its failure to present an exit strategy.”   Eight states currently have constitutional prohibitions against government investment in private corporations.  Those states are Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia.   Turner said a constitutional amendment would ”guarantee that the government could not gain control of private enterprise and place our capitalist system at risk.”

great, I guess that means we’ll stop writing laws for targeted tax breaks for companies making money hand over fist (can you say Big Oil? I knew you could). You know, so that we will stay out of the business of making money. Seems to me there are some Repubs on here who need a bit of refreshing on their civics lessons instead of parroting everything Rush tells them to say.

I would argue it is just as important to keep the corporations out of goverment. No one ever considers the fact that our goverment has been bought and paid for a long time ago. The representatives we elect move in and out of the private and public sector making policies that benefit them and the kind. Meanwhile we have Glenn Beck cronies crying over the fact that we are going be socialist , which is as ludicrious as the statement “government for the people of the people by the people”. Until we quit making celebrities out of every moron we see on TV we get what we deserve.

Turner has surprised me with this one. Turner needs to work with the legislators in Ohio to prohibit govt ownership like the 8 other states have. An amendment to the constitution would take to like. By then Obama will have taken over everything just like Chavez.

This is simple. The federal government has no business buying corporations.

The government takeover of GM is just the beginning. Obama and Congress will not stop until they’ve got us all on the government payroll. It’s good to finally see a politician doing something to stop this madness.

Turner’s got it right this time. Government cannot even run itself, so how are they going to help the economy by screwing up businesses? No to Government Motors!

You know you’re a liberal if you believe the only reason socialism hasn’t worked is because the right people haven’t been in charge. Vote Democrat - it’s easier than thinking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1FCmfo2Ft4

Thanks Mr Turner, I support your efforts. I hope you are successful as the current admininstration seems extremely adept at inserting itself in the business mainstream…and the fourth estate gives them a pass every time.

I believe Mr. Turner’s intentions are good and he is right in trying to prevent America’s headlong tumble into Obama’s Marxist “vision”, but preserving big corporations in their current form is not the answer either. What is needed is worker ownership of the means of production. There are models out there… Ronald Reagan’s Speech on Project Economic Justice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06vP84SqnS4 The SRC Story http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do9zeFpBoPI

To Lazermoth: You are clueless! It is called Marxism! Your type always wants and expects for big brother to “take care” of you and your kind. Look at the Karl Marx-inspired communism/socialism as practiced in the Soviet Union after World War II. The American descent into Marxism is happening with breathtaking speed. I applaud Mike Turner.

Cngressman Turner, I applaud your efforts. Apparently there are a lot of people in Dayton who don’t know anything about business, the constitution, or real freedom by reading many of the other comments posted here. I suggest they go back and re-take their 9th grade civics class.

Great - another Republican obstructionist. It’s one thing to see your religion in unfettered, free-market capitalism shatter and dissolve, taking out economy with it. One might make an argument that we didn’t realize how bad it could be’ that it couldn’t get this bad, that businesses wouldn’t let things get so out of control. But now, to obstruct the President when he’s trying to put the pieces back together, that is unforgivable.

Do what it takes to get the government out of controlling private companies. Consider this: If you work for a company, and the government takes over your major competitor, would you welcome that? You shouldn’t. Your company has to make a profit to survive. A government controlled company doesn’t. They are tax payer subsidized. How long does you company stay in business when your competitor (government) can undersell you and drive you out of the market? The government has NEVER been able to make a profit (Post Office and Amtrack come to mind). They just subsidize with your tax dollars.
