UPDATED: Senate plan calls for oil and gas drilling at state parks

The Ohio Senate on Wednesday, June 3, is expected to approve a version of the state budget, House Bill 1, that will permit drilling for oil and gas at state parks and other state properties.

“Drilling technology has come a long way and can be done safely and unobtrusively,” Sen. Keith Faber, R-Celina, said in a press release. “This proposal provides a new and stable revenue source for our state parks that doesn’t burden taxpayers and will increase domestic fuel production.”

However, Jack Shaner, deputy director of the Ohio Environmental Council, objected.

“It’s hard to simultaneously preserve parks and drill our parks,” said Shaner.

After the Senate approves its $53 billion version of the state budget, a House-Senate conference committee is expected to be formed to work out a compromise with the version of the budget passed earlier by the House.

The goal is to have the budget passed and signed by Gov. Ted Strickland before July 1, start of the new fiscal year.

This is from Sen. Keith Faber, R-Celina, sponsor of the proposal. It could bring in $20 million in lease bonus payments initially and annual revenue to the state between $3 million and $5 million.

There is no such thing as global warming, its now called climate change since the world wide temperatures have been going down for years now. Stop being a sheep and look at both sides. You need to look at the websites you use and find out who sponsors them before you decide the information is credible.

Drill your brains out! Ohio needs more income and can make due with fewer unused parks. If we’re all broke, who wants to go to the park?

There already are capped wells at the Sycamore State Park. All they need do is open them up and they are ready for production. If it is done in an environmental safe manner I am all for using the resource.

hey tommyv, by all means, drill all you want on your six farms, but leave the state parks alone. The land is supposed to be preserved - not just mostly or kind of preserved - that’s the point of the state parks! All of you who think this is a good idea must have never visited one.

I agree we should drill for more domestic oil. Do poeple understand that only 45% of each barrel of oil goes to making gasoline. The rest of it gos to making porducts.

We can’t drill in Anwar, but can drill in state parks in Ohio. Why don’t we start drilling in the capital and use politians as drill bit cleaners?

I am soo sick and tired of people saying that if you don’t want parks ruined then your a “liberal”. Maybe I just want some part of the country to stay pristine. Humans are so destructive and selfish. If they want to drill for oil to save the state money(which I doubt) then how about exploring around abandoned factory sites or warehouses. Those areas are all ready ruined, so nothing would be harmed and we may employ citizens.

As “No ruined parks” pointed out, we are not talking about “a hole.” I doubt that it will be the “same intrusion as a parked truck.”

Who are all these idiots who support this proposal. It’s time we quit relying on gas and oil and start developing renewable energy source. More drilling is like trying to cover a gush wound with a bandaid.

Drill baby drill! We need to stop throwing money elsewhere and relying on everone else and use what we have right here in our own backyards (or in this case, our parks)! It’s about time!

I’m all for what someone else mentioned, let’s drill in the churches, wouldn’t bother me one bit. Then maybe they could protest their own buildings and leave everyone else alone.

This is only ok if they lower the sales tax or income tax. If this is, we need more money so we can spend more, then forget it.

Contrary to the first two opinions, I am all for drilling in our state parks and state forests. Oil and gas drilling can be done with about the same intrusion of a parked truck! It would bring income and jobs to our state which we desperately need. I own six farms here in western Ohio and could effectively drill them with less disturbance than a water well. I am all for it. Way to go republicans. It is about time you are getting off your tax-raising butts and recognizing the mess you created in our state in the 90s.

By no to ruined parks

June 3, 2009 11:46 AM | Link to this

I glad that the republicans asked the citizen if they wanted their state parks ruined by destroying native plants and animals so that they can put in the unobtrusive roads, drills, and pipelines. Not to mention all of the heavy equipment it takes to keep it running. You can’t get something back once it is destroyed. I am sure they will sugarcoat their story enough to get it passed. Maybe we can put a oil drill in the middle of their house to see how much they like it.
