Eye on Ohio: “Love” ad for John McCain

The ad: “Love,” a 60-second television commercial.
Producer: John McCain campaign.
Where to see it: It started running Tuesday, July 8, in Ohio and other battleground states.
Script: (Male announcer) “It was a time of uncertainty, hope and change. The ‘Summer Of Love.’ Half a world away, another kind of love — of country. John McCain: Shot down. Bayoneted. Tortured. Offered early release, he said, ‘No.’ He’d sworn an oath. Home, he turned to public service. His philosophy: before party, polls and self … America. A maverick, John McCain tackled campaign reform, military reform, spending reform. He took on presidents, partisans and popular opinion. He believes our world is dangerous, our economy in shambles. John McCain doesn’t always tell us what we ‘hope’ to hear. Beautiful words cannot make our lives better. But a man who has always put his country and her people before self, before politics, can. Don’t ‘hope’ for a better life. Vote for one. McCain.” McCain: “I’m John McCain and I approve this message.”
Video: Opens with scenes of San Francisco in the 1960s, then goes to a plane in flight, presumably in Vietnam, then pictures of young John McCain in uniform and gear and in a hospital bed, interspersed with other Vietnam images. Then come pictures of McCain’s political career, featuring the likes of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan and even Ohio’s John Glenn. (And is that Cleveland-area Democratic U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich in the back?) McCain giving speeches, meeting voters, looking pensive. Saluting. Smiling.
Analysis: Even back in 2000, when McCain was running for the Republican presidential nomination, his supporters often said that, whatever problems he might have in Republican primaries, he would be a stronger candidate in November than George W. Bush. What they had in mind was the pitch made here: He has a heroic military record and an independent political record that is presumably attractive to independent voters.
During the Republican primaries of 2008, McCain went out of his way to downplay the whole “maverick” thing, promoting the contrary image of himself as a “foot soldier in the Reagan revolution,” a phrase he uttered again and again. Just how much he turned his back on his old ways is an issue in the general election. Barack Obama has said “the wheels have come off the ‘Straight-talk Express,’” the name of McCain’s 2000 campaign bus.
McCain certainly has taken an independent posture on campaign finance reform over the years, pushing for new regulations against all manner of Republican opposition. As for “spending reform,” that’s apparently a reference to his work against “earmarks” and “pork-barrel spending” (generally seen as amounting to about 1 percent of the federal budget). “Military reform” is a vague term sometimes associated with the effort to reduce the number of stateside military bases, which he has supported.
NIn declaring “our economy is in shambles,” McCain is trying to distance himself from the president. But he has recently embraced the core of the administration’s economic policies, the Bush tax cuts. His references to “hope” are swipes at Obama, who has associated himself with the word. McCain is also saying that just because Obama gives better speeches doesn’t mean he’d be a better president.

I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR JOHN MCCAIN’S ANSWER TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTION… “DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN VIETNAM AS WELL?” WHEN HE ANSWERS THAT THRUTHFULLY THEN THE WORLD WILL SEE THAT HE CARES NOTHING OF CAUSES ONLY WINNING A WAR OR CAMPAIGN. HE WAS A VERY NICE LOOKING YOUNG MAN BEFORE HE WAS SPOILED BY THE GREEDY REPUBLICAN PARTY. NOW HE HAS DARTING SQUINTY EYES LIKE THE REST OF THEM ONLY INTERESTED IN THEIR STOCK AND INVESTMENTS WHATEVER THE COST TO REAL AMERICANS.

Now how about you actually READING and understanding Obama’s proposal? I wasted a good bit of time on you the last time you totally screwed up what someone mistakening told you, and now I have to do it again. For your reading pleasure, here is the actual paragraphs from Sen. Obama’s fiscal proposals which you obviously hadn’t read. “Create Automatic Workplace Pensions: Obama’s retirement security plan will automatically enroll workers in a workplace pension plan. Under his plan, employers who do not currently offer a retirement plan, will be required to enroll their employees in a direct-deposit IRA account that is compatible to existing direct-deposit payroll systems. Employees may opt-out if they choose. Experts estimate that this program will increase the savings participation rate for low and middle-income workers from its current 15 percent level to around 80 percent. Expand Retirement Savings Incentives for Working Families: Obama will ensure savings incentives are fair to all workers by creating a generous savings match for low and middle-income Americans. His plan will match 50 percent of the first $1,000 of savings for families that earn less than $75,000. The savings match will be automatically deposited into designated personal accounts. Over 80 percent of these savings incentives will go to new savers.” Obama Fiscal Proposals, Obama Web Site) Ethel once again I will point out to you that this proposal IS NOT “employer sponsered”. It is the money of the EMPLOYEE which would go, by payroll deduction, at the employee’s request into savings accounts. The employER would only be required to have the capability for that deduction to be transfered to the bank. Ethel, this time try to understand and don’t repeat stuff which you know nothing about.

I agree with the two postings of giving careful consideration to the records of both candidates. Sen. McCain is one of the few Senators from both parties that really stood up to GWB regarding torture, global warming, getting rid of Donald Rumsfeld showing a lot of courage and leadership. The most impressive thing about Sen. McCain is that he has served this country over an extended number of years. His work in the Senate has produced landmark legislation on a bipartisan basis including election finance reform and has worked very cooperatively with many Democrats. His energy policy is multifaceted where conservation, alternative source, and job development are major parts. At first, I was uncertain if offshore drilling was a good idea and now I do not think exploring that bold is a bad idea. I am hoping that Sen. McCain refines his tax proposals to cover more of the middle class, but getting rid of the AMT is a good idea. When I recently reviewed Sen. Obama’s proposals, I do not know how he plans to cover the costs of his programs. For example, he wants to have employer sponsored retirement accounts and have the government match up to $500. Keep watching for the leadership and ideas coming from the candidates. And I also wished we had better options. But I plan to support Sen. McCain because of his maturity, experience, and leadership based on his successful record over many years.

I’m glad to hear more about Senator McCain’s heroics as a U.S. Navy pilot, and POW; I think it embodies his dedication to “country first”, and the mental toughness it takes to be a leader. His family holds a long legacy of service to the country. Hes a humble and honest man whose accomplishments speak volumes; hell get my vote.

As an undecided independent (military retiree who was against the rush to war) and who has not voted republican for president in decades, I like the tone and message in the McCain ad. Question is, am I simply being manipulated by campaign staffers and marketing types only to get leadership as usual. At least now, McCain finally acknowledges economic issues, hopefully from a non-millionaire’s perspective. Regarding military service and presidency, a big issue to me in the last two presidential campaigns is both Kerry and Gore (unlike Bush junior)actually served in Viet Nam. If they had been elected, my guess is they might have handled things better or more thoughtfully regarding war. I think military people who have served in the war theaters and survived have learned a lot and are less likely to rush others to war. I agree there needs to be more to the presidential qualifications. I am not concerned about McCain’s inability to give stirring speeches. However, I want to hear more about his ideas on energy, economics, etc. He has to convince me he also has some intellect and concerns the republican party has rarely shown (on issues including the environment). I also agree with him, we need to get tough on spending and taxes. As of now, I do not know if I will be voting the lesser of evils among major parties and independents or have someone I can really get fired up about. My confidence in our leadership seems to be down in the basement, and I wish we had more quality options.
