Do you watch the commercials on your DVR?

A recent New York Times article about the DVR cited a Nielsen study that “46 percent of viewers 18 to 49 years old for all four networks taken together are watching the commercials during playback.” Why?

The Times quotes Brad Adgate, Horizon Media’s senior vice president for research, as saying, “It’s still a passive activity.”

This statistic shocked me. Do you watch the commercials on your DVR’d shows?

Not unless I forget I am watching it on tape. And it is interesting when you fast forward and think about how much time you waste on commercials when you watch the programs live.

I also fast foward through commercials, unless I stepped away during a commercial break. The only time I watch a commercial is if it is a funny one, or for an upcoming show I haven’t seen a preview for (like V).

Directv DVR now lets you pause live TV switch to another channel and watch that channel till commercials come on, then you pause that channel and switch back the other previous channel and start where you left off You can then fast forward through the commercials on both channels of live TV. Great with sports watching two games commercial free!!

Heck, sometimes I don’t even watch half the show on my DVR. I’ll skip through both the commercials and the uninteresting portions of the show.

I rarely watch the commercials. It’s amazing how quickly you can get through a show by skipping the ads.
