Valentine’s Day lacks romance, full of humor

Valentine’s Day has never been high on my Favorite Holiday’s list (and Sweetest Day? I still think Hallmark made that one up).

I was never much of a mushy-gushy, sweet-and-sappy kind of gal but, I do believe you should say “I love you” to your Valentine every day - not just one.

Last year, we spent Valentine’s Day at the bowling alley with some friends and all of our kids; and actually, it was a great time.

This year, we attempted to make fondue at home.

Sometimes I wonder what goes through my husband’s mind but, he loves to cook and he’s especially good - great - at it (lucky me!).

So, it was fondue we ate on Valentine’s Day, despite the glaring fact that: Fondue (particularly the forks) + kids = bad idea.

The evening started off well. Another couple joined us, and we all surrounded the one little fondue pot in the middle of the table - ideally, there should have been two pots.

Being that the pot was hot, we had to handle the “cooking” for the kids.

“Is mine done yet? I’m hungry!”

“Mine is the green fork, not the blue one!”

“Why is it so tiny? Can I have some Ranch?”

In the midst of trying to cook our own bits of meat in the already over-crowded pot, we were refereeing the boys who found the sharp fondue forks to be fantastic little weapons.

While dodging jabs to the hand, my 18-month-old daughter suddenly had extra long arms and sticky fingers. She grabbed and wielded anything and everything she could reach: fondue forks, cups of milk, plates, silverware, even a mushroom at one point (which ended up on the other side of the room).

And if she couldn’t reach it, she screamed for it. Loud. Very loud.

Naturally, while snatching a blob of chicken from the baby’s grasp, a cup of juice was spilled on the table, leaving us to soak up the mess with paper towels while trying to avoid catching them on fire in the fondue flame.

Dessert followed, with chocolate drenched cakes and fruit, thus resulting in yet another choking incident with the baby who was cramming it all in.

But, once she had her fill of fondue food, she let us know by practically belching the alphabet.

She only topped herself by, well, audibly doing the same from her other end.

As is the case with some (not all) couples with kids, romance was definitely not “in the air” this Valentine’s Day, but laughter sure was.
