Flashing timer toothbrushes perfect for little teeth

Chew on this: February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and the way we teach our kids to brush can set them up for a healthy set of teeth and gums that will last a lifetime.

Experts say parents need to make the brushing experience a positive one, and the perfect product for that landed in the Adventures in Motherhood mailbag: light-up character toothbrushes from Dr. Fresh Inc.

These fun, flashy toothbrushes from the FireFly family “time” a child’s brushing. Each push of a button gives 1 minute of flashing, the time dentists say is needed to thoroughly brush each row of teeth.

My son was delighted to try the Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 brush, and his enthusiasm hasn’t waned. It’s taken up residence on our bathroom counter right next door to his hand-washing timer I wrote about a few blogs back.

You can choose from the original FireFly, or pick the new Peanuts, Barbie, Spider-Man or Baby FireFly toothbrushes — ranging from 99 cents to $4. They’re available nationwide at drugstores and retailers such as Target and Meijer.

The twinkling Baby FireFly, sized just right for toddlers’ mouths, provides the perfect distraction for squirmy tots so mommies can steal a few moments to brush those emerging pearly whites. Have you ever tried to pry a baby’s mouth open? You need every trick at your disposal.

According to the FireFly fact sheet:

— Inadequate, rushed brushing is one of the main causes of early childhood cavities; these friendly and familiar character brushes help encourage good oral care in young children.

— Soft, high-quality dupont bristles won’t cause microscopic cuts to children’s delicate gums.

— Ergonomically sized for a child’s hands.

— Light stops functioning after about 3 months, indicating it is time to replace the toothbrush.

Another cool tip from Dr. Fresh: Try them in “disco mode” with the lights off!

My daughters would not suffer the same fate

I was not taught proper oral care as a child in the 50’s. By the time I began to practice proper hygeie, it was too late. I’ve had dental problems off and on since then. My daughters would not suffer the same fate. My wife and I were dental “totalitarians” (in a positive/good way) with them, and it paid off. They are 29 and 34 years of age, had minor tooth corrections with braces as teenagers, and neither one of them has ever, to this day, had a cavity. They are continuing the practice with their children. Start them early…it pays off.
