Bead up son’s nose sends mom into panic mode
I’ll be the first to admit it: I don’t do well with kid injuries.
I recall a certain incident in which my then-5-year-old son put a staple into his thumb and screamed bloody murder.
I calmly reacted how I normally do in emergency situations involving my children in pain — by screeching for my husband to come to the rescue.
(What WAS Santa thinking anyway, putting that Pokemon stapler into a preschooler’s Christmas stocking?!)
This chink in my Super Mom armor came to light a few nights ago — again.
My 10-year-old daughter and I were “crafting” together, making a beaded bookmark for her friend’s birthday. The mound of sparkly beads on the table attracted the attention of my passing 3-year-old, who demanded an anklet with his name in letter beads, so I dutifully start sorting through the pile.
A moment later, chaos: My son had shoved a bead up his nose and instantly started wailing in pain.
In a panic, I try digging it out — I have long fingernails, but apparently not long enough. No luck. More wails.
I send daughter scurrying for tweezers while I run for Hubby’s camp headlamp. I have another go at the bead. It doesn’t budge, and my son’s tears are making everything slippery. I start thinking emergency room trip.
Then I remember my bailout and holler, “Help! Daddy! Come quick!”
In a flash, there he is by my side. He grabs a tissue from the box nearby. He instructs my son to blow his nose. “Harder! Don’t suck in! Blow harder!”
Out pops the blue metallic bead, and Hubby is elevated to hero status — again.
Thank goodness one of us can keep a cool head!

ER doc showed me this: You need 2 people, one to cover child’s ears, one to cover other nostril and child’s mouth. Form a seal with your mouth over child’s and blow/cough hard. Whatever is in your child’s nose will come flying out of the only available exit. Works great, wish I would have known it sooner!

This is so funny because it sounds just like me. That’s what daddies are good for! Being calm in an emergency with kids! I used to frequently make trips to the hospital over little things but now I just get dad or grandma’s advice!

you are lucky it was a bead. when my daughter was 4 she went to a new daycare. they had pea gravel on the playground. she thought it was neat and decided to keep some to show her dad. She had no pockets so she put 4 pieces in her nose. She forgot to mention it when I brought her home but her nose was running. When I tried to get her to blow I could see she was uncomfy. I looked in her nose and could see something. When I asked her she told me the story. After many failed attempts at removal, off to the ED we went, where removal occurred with a ballooned catheter and with her strapped like a pappoose. Still a good story, and now she is a new mom.

I’ve been there before. I couldn’t get it out. A trip to ER. The doctor came out and said, I’ll try one more thing, then I”ll have to put her under. (he got it out). Well, talking about losing it. I could not stop crying. She was begging for help, but didn’t understand I was getting her help. Needless to say, she got over it a lot faster than I did.
