Board approves library cuts

The Middletown Board of Education unanimously approved the elimination of seven library manager positions, with comments that they regret the cut of library services.

“It seems like a drastic move to me,” said board Vice President Katie McNeil. “I’m a real advocate of library services.”

McNeil thanked the library managers, three of who where in the audience, for their service and said she hopes that in the face of this cut, there will be an opportunity for parents or community members to fill the void by volunteering.

Still, McNeil asked the district to evaluate the impact of the cuts and give a report in the spring.

“It’s a concern that I hope the staff will continue to evaluate and address where we need to be in the future,” she said.

“It pains me to cut hours of the staffing in our libraries,” board member Marcia Andrew.

On this agenda tonight, it’s the only cut we’re looking at, but it’s one of a series of cuts,” she said. “We wouldn’t be doing this if we didn’t feel we needed.”

Hello. I think the article is really interesting. I am even interested in reading more. How soon will you update your blog?

It must not have seemed too drastic, Ms. McNeil. For the cost of the ONE additional psychologist you just hired, you probably could’ve saved most, if not all, of the library managers!

These stories never tell us how much investigation was done before the cuts. What areas did the school board members look at to cut rather than the just the libraries?

So now the schools are going to get volunteers to come into the libraries to read to the classes? Really? Last time I checked, it was difficult to get some parents into the schools for even a conference!

Reading is being pushed more than any subject in our schools and someone had the bright idea to cut the library managers. What kind of sense does this make. You apparently haven’t visited a school library. How do you think a volunteer is going to fill the void of a librarian? Do you think a kid is going to be able to walk into a library and ask for a specific book and the volunteer is going to have any idea as where the book will be. The librarians in our schools know their library like the back of their hand. Tell me, Marcia Andrew, do you think you are that good, then maybe you should volunteer in the libraries.
