School board to vote on texting ban
The Madison Board of Education will vote Monday on closing the phone on text messaging between staff and students.
Madison will be the first school in the area to consider banning texting.
Board members first discussed the ban five months ago, following an incident last school year in which a former teacher and coach was fired and criminally convicted for a sexual crime that was discovered when an adult reported the coach had been inappropriately text messaging a girl.
Leaders of the Madison Board of Education have opposite views on the proposed policy - which says “under no circumstances may personnel send text messages to students.”
“The fact is we had a problem with it, and as an organization we have not done anything,” said board President Tim Young, who said he’ll definitely vote for the policy.
Board Vice President Glenn Cappel said he’ll vote against the policy. “I just think when you text, that puts everything into writing. That’s something you can go actually go back and look at,” he said.
Young said he hopes the policy will prevent texting, but any necessary discipline, which could include termination, will be left up to the superintendent.
What do you think? Should Madison forbid texting between students and staff?
