$12 too much?

Last night, the Franklin Board of Education heard an update on next year’s school fees - the cost students pay for things like workbooks in certain classes.

Most fees are staying the same next year for high school classes, but there was one fee increase that board member Lori Raleigh couldn’t live with: a $12 increase in the fee for chemistry class.

At $30 total, the cost covers things like chemicals used in lab experiments. The principal said the increase is a result of rising prices for those materials.

Raleigh said she would rather see that extra cost covered by the school.

Board members also expressed that they want to keep the cap on fees at the elementary school at $35 for kindergarten and $50 for other grades.

With that cap last year, the district covered $34,637 in fees overall at the elementary schools.

Raleigh said she wants to keep those fees consistent for families in the face of this economic crisis.

Board member Heidi Fella said she understands costs go up.

“I just don’t see right now how we can pass that onto the parents,” she said.

Board members will heard final recommendations on the fees at their next meeting.
