High school considers grading change
Franklin school officials are considering a change to the grading policy that would create a plus and minus on letter grades.
Franklin currently has a A, B, C, D, F grading policy. It gives a student a 4.0 A if they earn between 100 percent and 92 percent in a class.
Under the new proposed policy, a student would need to earn at least a 96 percent in a class to get a 4.0, or an A grade.
A 92 percent to 95 percent would earn a student an A- and a 3.7… and so on down the grading scale with a B+, B, B-, etc.
High school Principal David Riegel said adding the +/- policy would encourage students to work harder on semester exams.
“It gives a more precise measurement of how a student is performing,” he told the district’s curriculum council, a group of school employees, parents and community members.
Currently, Riegel said, students are graded on a weighted formula for the two 9 weeks and their semester exam. So, if there were two students who both had a “C” for the first 9 weeks and a “C” for the second 9 weeks.. then one student got an “A” on the semester exam and one student got an “F”… they both end up with a “C” overall.
The grading change would affect all students if approved for the 2009-10 school year. It must go before the school board for approval.
Members of the curriculum council said they were in favor of the change, though some voiced questions about the effect on student grade point averages and how colleges would view an A- versus an A.
What do you think of a +/- grading policy?

I think this is a great idea. As a student that graduated from FHS, I was brought up on this type of grading scale. When I got in college, however, I had to get use to this +/- grading scale, which was a BIG change among all the other major changes that college brings. I believe that if students were introduced to this grading scale in high school that they would be better prepared for college grading scales.
