Madison to vote on random drug testing program
The Madison Board of Education will be voting tonight on a motion to do away with random drug testing of classified employees.
The board voted in April to continue with the program, which cost $4,000 for this school year. But tonight, they’ll be voting on a motion to do away with the program.
Board President Tim Young said employees are already tested before hire and for suspicion and in the case of an accident.
“Do we really need to be spending $4,000 to do this,” Young said by phone.
Young said the district is not receiving any discount of workers compensation premiums for the program and must take another look at it as they face possible budget cuts from the state.
In the governor’s proposed two-year budget, Madison would see a 2 percent decrease in funding in the second year as the state guarantee for funding is reduced.
The school board will also be discussing the contract with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office for a school resource officer.
They won’t be taking a vote on the matter, but will be talking about the contract. The district and the sheriff’s office currently split the cost of having the resource officer in the schools.
