What’s in a name?
Middle school or junior high?
That’s the question on deck.
Franklin City Schools has a building with seventh and eight graders that, at least informally, goes by both names - junior high and middle school.
But recently, a group of educators and community members got together to sort out what that building should really be called and how best to group the grades there.
The minutes from that meeting say middle schools are designed specifically for students ages 11-14, and are often based on a teaming concept. They commonly have grade configurations of six through eight, seven and eight or five through eight.
Junior highs are more like “mini high schools.”
The group decided they would prefer Franklin’s middle school be grades six through eight, though at this time the district doesn’t have a building that would work for that grouping. They also agreed now is not the time to ask voters for a building program.
So they decided, from here on out, everyone should call it the “Franklin Middle School.”
What do you think? What’s in a name?
