Veterans come forward for diplomas

mj111008bargerp1.JPG

Earlier this week, I met with Joseph Barger, a World War II veteran who never received his high school diploma.

Barger was just 17-years-old when he dropped out of high school and was drafted into the military.

He lived a whole lifetime without his diploma, married, worked, raised three children, widowed and retired. But last week, when he went to Franklin High School to cast his vote, he met Principal Dave Riegel and was told he would be given an honorary diploma.

Veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are eligible to receive honorary diplomas under Ohio law. The diplomas can also be given to a living relative of a deceased veteran.

After the story on Barger ran in the newspaper, Riegel told me two more veterans had come forward to claim their diplomas.
