Are Vals and Sals a thing of the past?

As we’ve gotten further into the graduation season I’ve noticed that more and more schools seem to be dropping the salutatorian and valedictorian titles in favor of “top student” monikers.

In this area, some schools are still using the traditional “valedictorian” and “salutatorian” titles; some, like Valley View, who name numerous — ten this year — valedictorians and salutatorians each year; and ones who have switched to just naming “top students.”

Really, it seems it all comes down to words. I don’t know that it makes a difference in, for example, applying to college or for scholarships because the title wouldn’t change the actual class ranking of 1.

Have you noticed more schools abandoning the traditional titles?
