Do you know “parents who host?”

In today’s paper, I wrote about Edgewood City Schools kicking off a “parents who host lose the most” campaign later this week.

This is an annual campaign from the Drug Free Action Alliance, timed to coincide with the prom and graduation season.

According to the campaign literature I received yesterday, 29 percent of parents and 29 percent of teens surveyed said they know an adult who hosts teen alcohol parties.

Do you know anyone who allows underage people to drink in their home?

The campaign literature reminds me of a scene from Mean Girls with Lindsay Lohan as Cady Harris and Amy Poehler as Mrs. George.

Mrs. George: [serving the Plastics fruit drinks] Hey, you guys! Happy hour is from four to six!
Cady: Um, is there alcohol in this?
Mrs. George: Oh, God, honey, no! What kind of mother do you think I am? Why, do you want a little bit? Because if you’re going to drink I’d rather you do it in the house.

That’s exactly the situation this campaign targets. According to the alliance, it is illegal to give teens alcohol in your home or to let them consume or possess it in your home and adults who knowingly do so are liable for any injuries or damage those teens cause after drinking.

According to the campaign, the percentage of teens who said they know parents hosting teen alcohol parties decreased after the campaign launch.

Do you know parents who let teens drink? Do you think that these campaigns make any difference?
