Emerald Ash Borer infesting ash trees in Jacot Park

According to the weekly update released Sept. 15 by City Manager Judy Gilleland, the Emerald Ash Borer has been found to be infesting trees in the city’s Jacot Park.

The Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive beetle from Asia that kills ash trees, was discovered in two ash trees and is suspected in a third, according to Gilleland. It’s the first confirmed observation on city-owned property.

The ash borer was first identified on private property in Middletown in 2009. The insect was first confirmed to be infecting trees in Butler County in 2007, when infected ash trees were found in Monroe. Butler County is one of 53 Ohio counties with confirmed infestations. State officials earlier this month declared that the tree-killing bug had won the fight in Ohio.

“We are working on a plan to monitor and remove the trees as budgets allow. We also have a great volunteer Tree Commission which assists with these endeavors,” Gilleland said in her update, which you can view as an attachment to this blog.

There are two trees on Brentwood St. close to the corner of Selden, they are on city property between the street and the side walk. I do believe these two trees are Ash trees and much of both are dead I think by the emarld ash borer, please check them as there is electric wires going through them and can be a safety hazzard.

Homeowners should be aware there is a product on the market for protecting ash trees from EAB as well as other invasive insects. It just became available in August. The high concentrate, imidicloprid product is called, Optrol. Research show that that Optrol will protect all size of ash tree from Emerald Ash borer. Optrol is being sold at independent garden centers and other small retailers.
