The kid I left in the car is all right, woman tells police
VANDALIA April 4 An officer was dispatched to Rite Aid, 10 W. National Road, and observed a baby asleep in the backseat of an otherwise unoccupied, running vehicle. The driver, the baby’s mother, exited the store as the officer was preparing to gain entry to the locked vehicle. She told the officer she left her 9-month-old son in the vehicle so she could run into the store for five minutes and pick up a prescription. The officer told the subject she can’t leave her baby unattended in a vehicle. She asked, “Why?” The officer unlocked the vehicle and saw the baby was fine. The subject was issued a summons on a charge of child endangering. She told the officer she didn’t mean to leave her baby in the vehicle, and that as she got out the door shut and her door locks automatically. She also said she didn’t want to use her pre-paid cell phone minutes, so she went into the store to call police and picked up her prescription as well. The subject advised she called from a pay phone. The officer noted there is no pay phone at Rite Aid.
