Bath impressed with tailbacks competing for starting job

Now that Thomas Merriweather has concluded his senior season as Miami University’s tailback, the competition for that starting spot in 2011 is up for grabs among five players, all of them doing well, according to tight ends and running backs coach Mike Bath.

“They’ve been great, working hard, their eyes wide open, trying to be the best sponge they can be,” he said.

The five tailbacks trying to fill the shoes of Merriweather — who came on strong over the last half of Miami’s 2010 championship season, finishing with 921 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns — are Danny Green, Tracy Woods, Orne Bey, Willie Culpepper and Tyrone Jones.

Green was redshirted in 2008. He played in 10 games in 2009 (rushing for 46 yards) and 11 games last season (rushing for 41 yards).

Woods, Bey and Culpepper were part of the 2010 freshman class but Woods was the only one of the three who carried the ball, finishing second behind Merriweather with 376 rushing yards with a 4.0 average per carry.

Jones is a walk-on, originally designated as a defensive back or wide receiver, who will be a senior in 2012.
