The NCAA Blog: Day 1 in New Hampshire
It’s been a long day of traveling, but I’m settled in my hotel room in Manchester, N.H., and getting ready for three days of Miami University hockey in the NCAA Northeast Regional.
Friday is practice day for all four teams — New Hampshire, Miami, Notre Dame and Merrimack — at Verizon Wireless Arena in downtown Manchester. Haven’t been inside the building yet, but it looked impressive from the outside tonight with lots of cool lights and logos of the four teams. Miami practices from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Friday, then coach Enrico Blasi and a couple players will attend the RedHawks’ press conference from 2-2:30. I’ll be there all day.
The MU group has arrived and is staying at this hotel. Not sure if they want the general public to know where they’re staying, so I’ll do my part and keep it under wraps. I did see Blasi sharing a laugh with some coaches (appeared to be some coaches, I thought I saw Miami sports information man Michael Weisman as well) in a dining area this evening. I was on my way back from a downtown eatery, Caesario’s, pretty good stuff.
I know it’s cold at home, but it’s colder here, as you might expect. I drove through a couple brief snow squalls. One was particularly heavy while I was on the highway between here and Boston. I had to fly into Beantown’s Logan International Airport. I was wearing shorts a couple days ago at home, now I’m driving through mini-blizzards. I want 70 degrees and I want it now.
The local press is saying ticket sales are very good for Merrimack and New Hampshire, especially for Merrimack. These are essentially home games for both of those teams. Both campuses are about 35 miles away from Manchester, UNH to the northeast in Durham and Merrimack to the south in Andover, Mass. I confess … I couldn’t have told you where either campus was located until I looked them up.
I’ll be blogging and tweeting (@hjnsports) all weekend, so keep turning your attention this way. The regional semifinals are Saturday, top-seeded Miami vs. No. 4 New Hampshire at 4 p.m. and No. 2 Merrimack vs. No. 3 Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. The title game is set for 8 p.m. on Sunday.
That’s it for now. To be continued …
