Miami football renews series with Army

Miami University will renew its football series with the United States Military Academy, Director of Athletics Brad Bates announced today, May 4.

Army will play at Yager Stadium in Oxford in 2011 and 2015, then Miami will play in West Point, N.Y. at historic Blaik Field at Michie Stadium in 2016 and 2018.

“We are very excited to renew our history with the United States Military Academy,” Bates said. “The opportunity to compete against an institution that shares our values of tradition, intellectual excellence, service and leadership development provides a very special opportunity for our students, staff and fans. We are very grateful for the opportunity and look forward to this four-year partnership.”

Miami Head Coach Michael Haywood, an assistant at Army from 1989-90 under Coach Jim Young, also said he is excited about his team’s opportunity.

“We’re really looking forward to playing the United States Military Academy,” Haywood said. “It is an institution with great tradition, where the young men not only get a tremendous education, but also a chance to play Division I football. Army’s players are men of courage who have stepped forward to serve our country. It will be a great honor to play them in the future seasons.”

Miami and Army have played on four previous occasions. In 1960 and 1996, the Cadets defeated the RedHawks, but Miami turned the tables on Army by winning in 1997 and ’98.

In honor of legendary mentor Earl “Red” Blaik—a three-year letter winner at Miami (1915-17)—Army christened the Michie Stadium playing surface “Blaik Field” in 1999.

Blaik, a gridiron innovator, compiled an 18-year Army record of 121-33-10 and brought Army its only three national championships (1944, ‘45, ‘46). Blaik, the winningest coach in Army annals, is enshrined in the College Football Foundation Hall of Fame and the Miami Athletic Hall of Fame.
