Short-handed goal puts Miami on top

By Pete Conrad

Freshman defenseman Joe Hartman scored a short-handed goal with 1:18 left in the first period and the top-ranked Miami RedHawks lead No. 14/15 Notre Dame 1-0 after one period tonight, Dec. 4 at Steve Cady Arena.

Tommy Wingels assisted Hartman’s fourth goal of the season.

The period ended with eight Miami and Notre Dame players in close contact along the boards, and it wasn’t for a group hug.

After consulting for a couple minutes, the officials slapped Wingels with a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for hitting from behind. Miami’s Curtis McKenzie and Notre Dame’s Kyle Lawson each received 2-minute minors for roughing after the whistle. It all happened at the 20:00 mark.
