New nightclub to open in former Sloopy’s spot in March

The former Oregon District bar Sloopy’s, 613 E. Fifth St., which briefly reinvented itself as Bar Tiki, will reopen March 11 as Pulse Nite Club.

We told you about the bar’s sale and closing for renovation on the Lounge Lizards blog and Taste blog in early January.

The club’s new owner, Randy Handler, who also owns George Newcom’s Tavern, 418 E. Fifth St., and Clancy’s Tavern in Dayton, is promising a redesigned, larger bar and dance floor and tons of visual effects.

In a press release sent Wednesday, Feb. 16, he said the new club will have an upscale, classy feel. Vicki Waker of Cabinet Creations Design Gallery and J. Stanton, president of Southpaw Creation and Design, are heading up the club’s makeover. Stanton completed the interior design at SideBar, also in the Oregon District.

“We think people’s jaws will drop when they walk in here,” Handler said in the release. “There will be lots of things to look at.”

The club also will have a lounge area and there are plans to add a VIP “ultra lounge” in the back room of the club for parties and special events.

DJs will spin dance and Top 40s music and will be open Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

The club does not yet have a phone number. The Lounge Lizards will be sure to bring you more information on opening plans when we get them.

What do you think? Will you be checking out Pulse?

I am a drunk, so I can’t wait to drink there. I don’t pay my bills so I will have money.

It looks upscale and a nice place to host a venue.

An upscale Newcom’s? More 40-50 year old losers behind the bar? Another HORRIBLE DJ? Another trashy crowd? Yea, I give it at least two months. At least I know not to even try this one. Will be nice to split up the trash between two places on 5th though! Workers and customers.

Haha, Amy and Jen nailed that one! We were there last month for the first time in a couple years and could not agree more about Newcom’s! Terrible music and the staff was rude and old. A trashy meat market to top things off. Good idea to expand the business! What a joke.

The Oregon District needs video slots in all the bars to attract customers. Forget letting Pennsylvania take all our gambling revenue at some ill-advised horsetrack. It’s only fair after banning smoking that local businesses should benefit first from any change in the gambling law.

I think this will be a nice addition to the Oregon District. It will add pizzaz to the neighborhood. Good luck Randy, Pat, Dee and Dorrie. See you opening night!

The only successful addition to the Oregon District “bars” (used loosely) would be a wrecking ball. Why would anyone drive past 8 other places to the ghetto. Make sure you have metal detectors!

So sad, they come and go. What’s amazing is Newcom’s was making enough money to pay for a new place. Must be a write off each year. Why not make it two. Can’t be any worse than Newcom’s though. Not possible.

For all you Downtown Dayton (julie) haters maybe you should move to a wonderful place like columbus and visit areas like easton town center where you can get caught up in all the gang violence that goes on there or the 1000’s of bums in their downtown. Downtown Dayton’s safer. What is your idea of a bar? Apple Bee’s?

I’m really glad that the city of Dayton released that 35 year cap on the limit of lichor liscenses in the downtown area. Its obvious downtown’s nightlife scene is going to only get better. And I think its obvious Dayton can offer great stuff. We beat out all the cities in the state simply because of Masque. Along with Pulse, I know several other venues are opening in the Oregon this spring and Aquarius is getting a huge renovation in the sort of Gay District by St. Clair. Also, the Gay District is getting The Vault which is supposed to be high end (the same people who did the lighting for Club Masque are doing it for this place) and Club Remix. Its fun to see that these places are trying to give a wing at it more than ever before. We’ll see what happens…
