Are the ’90s the new ’80s?

Feel free to disagree, but ’80s night is so 2006. Been there, done that.

Everybody and their mother has thrown an ’80s party, and ’80s fashion (can we finally say goodbye to spandex?) has come and gone once again. The ubiquitous bar scene “‘80s night” had a slight resurgence in past months due to the passing of Michael Jackson and now ’80s-teen-flick king John Hughes, but all in all it’s time to move on.

The new retro is, of course, the ’90s. It only makes sense as we approach 2010 that pop culture would move on to recycling a new decade.

Now, we’re not saying that we don’t love a good ’80s night (‘cuz we do), but it’s time for a new generation to relive their ’90s days.

Anyway, the geniuses in the entertainment biz have already regurgitated “90210” and “Melrose Place” (not to mention that “Twilight” and all these vampire show spin-offs are all just this generation’s sad replicas of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).

Miley Cyrus and Max Azria’s tween line for Wal-mart has all your ’90s throwback essentials: flannel, plaid pleated minis, and, yes, even stirrup pants.

Plus if you’ve been living under a rock, or in the Midwest, you might not realize that 2009 has been the year of ’90s fashion. Harem pants (why did we stop calling them Hammer pants?) are all that and a bag of chips; you’ll definitely look “phat” walking down the street in ripped, DIY jeans (don’t forget the tights); and flannel’s comeback has trickled all the way down to Wal-Mart (where, incidentally, they never stopped selling flannel).

And now, to make the ’90s revival official, a way to celebrate right here in Dayton.

Club Vex, which used to be known as Pearl and is still known for a killer L’Eighties night (every Tuesday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.), is introducing Dayton scenesters (and everyone else) to ’90s night, aka KilluRadio.

Starting this Thursday, Aug. 13, you can head to the newly renovated bar at 101 S. St. Clair St. every Thursday for ’90s pop, plus funk, punk, breaks, ’90s electronic and more with DJs Matt Freeman, John Chapel, and DJ Funker.

DJ Matt Freeman said the DJs are going to be trying out some new things on Thursday nights.

“It’s a little bit of punk, a little bit of funk, and some new stuff…but not stuff that’s on the radio,” he said.

The base though, will be ’90s. The music comes free (no cover) before 11:30 p.m. and with some ice-cold Coors for $2. Well drinks are only $3 on Thursdays and they are open late.

18-and-up are welcome, but, honestly, if you were actually born in the ’90s it might be a little early to embrace the retro vibe. Your ’90s were all about Barney and “Blue’s Clues”. Thursday nights at Vex will definitely not be “Nick Jr.” fodder.

P.S. To any television execs looking to make bank on this resurgence: If you mess with “Daria” or “My So-Called Life,” I will go postal. Fart-Knockers!

What do you think? Will you check out ’90s night?

I don’t know about anyone else but I think the 90s fashion was just as bad as the 80s but without all the aqua-net…Anyone remember when it was cool to wear your clothes backwards when Criss-Cross came to the scene? Lord…

Yes, would like to clarify that 80s night on Tuesdays at Vex isn’t going anywhere. Please continue to rock out to your fav requests from any decade. I’m just super psyched for 90’s night cuz it’s much more my decade. I missed half the ’80s due to lack of being born.

Katie made me laugh SO hard concerning her comment about “missing” part of the ’80s because she was not born yet. I was there for all of it and let me tell you everything was GREAT!!!!!
