Hot shows, hot discs

On Wednesday night I went to Cincinnati to check out the sold out Social Distortion show at Bogart’s. Social Distortion — which totally rocked by the way — recently released a greatest hits collection of a few of it’s punk rock gems and although it comes in a bit short, it’s just as killer as the live show was. Here are three other upcoming shows I’m interested in that have terrific new releases out in stores. Check out the albums and if you like, check out the shows:

Dappled Cities Disc: “Granddance.” Playdate: July 31 at Newport Music Hall, 1722 N. High St., Columbus. Why so interested? Australia’s answer to the Shins offers listeners big feel good rock ’n’ roll. It doesn’t hurt that they’re teaming up with the Fratellis who are just as terrific for a tag team show.

The Nobility Disc: “The Mezzanine.” Playdate: Aug. 8 at the Nite Owl, 430 E. Fifth St., Dayton. Why so interested? Because you’re not going to see these guys playing small bars for much longer. With catchy harmonies and a laid back relaxed vibe it should be a really good night of music.

A Fine Frenzy Disc: One Cell In the Sea. Playdate: Aug. 23 at the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, 405 Neil Avenue, Columbus. Why so interested? Imagine Radiohead, Coldplay and Tori Amos rolled into a 22-year-old singer by the name of Alison Sudol. Teaming up with Rufus Wainwright to open his show will be great exposure. If she sounds as good live as she does on her new album we’ll be hearing more from her.

So, what are you listening to? Going to any summer concerts? Do you know any unknown bands that are just waiting to be discovered? Inquiring minds want to know …
