Final tips to save by
This may be the last Here’s the Deal column, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop saving and neither should you.
- Here are a few parting tips to remember for how to make saving money a daily part of your life:
- Coupon: This newspaper prints hundreds of dollars in coupons each week and if you aren’t using them, you are throwing away money. Every coupon you clip is another dollar in your pocket.
- Get organized: Knowing where your coupons and rebate forms are is key to capitalizing on your savings. Use file folders and magazine files to separate your coupon inserts by date or by category. Free sale and coupon match-up sites such as SavingsLifestyle.com and DealSeekingMom.com help you find the deals easily and efficiently.
- Pack your lunch: Use all those coupons to stockpile items you use most and save on your grocery budget. Use those groceries to pack your lunch. Whether it’s a homemade salad or a peanut butter sandwich, bringing your own food can save you $5-$10 a day. That’s money you can spend on something else other than your stomach.
- DIY: As long as you can lift a hammer, challenge yourself to tackle projects on your own. Anything you can do yourself will save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Programs on HGTV and the DIY Network can help you get ideas. Programs on these stations gave me the confidence to build a cabinet niche in my bathroom and rebuild my shower from scratch. You can do it, too.
- Facebook: Companies are using it to market products and offer free samples and coupons. Make sure to “Like” your favorite brands so you’ll be in the loop on specials. Freebieshark.com, which has a Facebook profile by the same name, posts free samples as they become available.
- Find freebies: Speaking of freebies, there are sites in addition to the ones already mentioned here you should check on a regular basis for free offers: Freebies4mom.com, FreeSampleFreak.com and AbsurdlyCool.com. Using these sites, you’ll get a constant stream of freebies — from magazines to food and beauty products — in your mailbox each week.
