Easter candy deals

Easter is April 12 and that means it’s time to start stocking up on candy and other goodies for Easter baskets. But filling up a basket doesn’t mean you have to empty your wallet. There are plenty of deals to be had.

Andrea Deckard, a Monroe resident, has helped compile a list of how you can snag candy at a discount on her Web site, Mommysnacks.net. Check out her deals of the week here. The candy combinations are endless.

You don’t need a golden egg to pay for an Easter basket rich in goodies. Homemade baskets with hand-picked items will save you a bundle. For example, for less than $5 you can get an Easter basket at Target (99 cents), three Peeps at Walgreens (39 cents each with Walgreens ad coupon), a Russel Stover chocolate bunny at CVS ($1.50 each), and 2 Cadbury cream eggs at Walgreens (50 cents each). And while that is just a simple basket, it gets the job done. I managed to get my spread into a basket for less than $10 and included enough chocolate to cause a coma.

Remember that not all the candy has to be “Easter-themed” and that bags of candy will go further than individual items and make baskets look fuller. A free and eco-friendly alternative to that plastic or store-bought basket filler is to shred colorful paper you have lying around the house. Run the paper through the household shredder and then pile it in.

And don’t forget books. They can be an inexpensive addition to Easter baskets, since many thrift stores sell used books for as little as 25 cents. I obtained a copy of the Velveteen Rabbit for that price at my local Goodwill.
