Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Don’t be idle

Today’s post expands off the post from last week about eco-modding. My investigation into mileage-boosting keeps coming back to a central philosophy: that the most effective gas-saving modification is to the behavior of the person behind the wheel.

One way to save gas is to reduce the time your car is idling. To that end, I came across Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services’ brochures that are part of the Southwest Ohio Anti-Idling Campaign.

You can read their tip sheet here, which has several facts about idling and tips on how to boost mileage by reducing the time your car’s running and not going anywhere.

The next time you;re driving somewhere, pay attention to how often your car sits still for more than 30 seconds. Can you cut back on idling? If so, share your suggestions here.

Thanks for bringing to public’s attention. This is one reason why West Chester chose the roundabout for traffic control instead of the standard traffic signal light. Engine idling at the intersection causes lost fuel, time, money and increase pollution. I ask motorists to give it a year to get use to it.

I have used roundabouts for years in my travels around New England. They are quite numerous there. It will be interesting to see how Ohio drivers, known for their impatience and lack of driving manners, fare in a roundabout situation where driving etiquette is an absolute necessity in order to make it work effectively.
