Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Sustainability on Sunday

I get a lot of spam. It’s par for the course in the newspaper business, where my email is all over the print and online versions of my stories, so I am quite used to clicking “junk” as much as “open” on my email account.

But a random mass mailing I received over the weekend actually had an interesting bit of info that’s applicable to this blog.

I received a link to an email newsletter on the topic of church building projects. The subject of the current issue is promoting sustainability within a church’s congregation.

An interesting topic, for several reasons.

First, think about the size of a typical house of worship. Even a small chapel is still larger than many houses, and the HVAC and electrical requirements, I suspect, can often be vast.

Also, and here’s where the newsletter makes an interesting point, churches are centers of learning. If a pastor, rabbi or priest drops a hint that his or her congregants should try to better protect their natural resources, you can bet the message will impact a lot more people than this blog could ever hope to do.

So take a look at the newsletter and share your thoughts: has your church taken any steps to be more sustainable? Do you think it’s religion’s place to touch this topic? Does the newsletter give you any ideas?
