Happy Earth Day!
Happy Earth Day!
Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…
So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?
Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?
A time to call for more action?
Or something in-between?
Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Trading fireworks for public works?
I received an email earlier this week from West Chester Twp. trustee Lee Wong regarding a topic that came up at the end of Tuesday’s trustee meeting. The trustees were discussing fireworks for this year’s Union Centre Boulevard Bash, and Wong voiced his opposition to funding the pyrotechnics.
“15 mins to blow $10K’s is not a good use of money,” he wrote. “I can use it to promote small business in town.”
The sustainable living connection to this issue came in an email Wong forwarded to me with his comments. It was originally written to him by a township resident. Read on, and share your thoughts about the comments.
“While I plan to attend the next Trustees’ meeting to personally address the topic of spending $10,000.00 to pay for fireworks for the next Union Centre Bash, my job may not allow. I do wish to convey that I am opposed to such an expenditure. There are more than enough opportunities for residents of the township to view fireworks throughout the year and there are underfunded items already or soon to be on the table for your consideration.
“One such is the list of various proposals from the Connections Committee, which is now in the hands of [the West Chester Development Department]. Rather than blowing up $10,000.00, I ask you to put your energy into considering what the Connections Committee has given to [the department]. Lasting much longer than the sight of an explosion in the dark sky are opportunities for residents to be better connected with each other and to minimize their carbon footprints as they patronize local businesses.”
So what do you think? Share your thoughts.

Spending $10,000.00 for fireworks is a collosal waste of money. We all like fireworks, but these are tough economic times, this is not a township function. The money has a much better use someplace in the township.
