Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Road warrior

As promised yesterday, here’s the scoop on my project to make my life a little more sustainable.

Right after I started my job with the Pulse-Journal, I deep-sixed my car in an embarrassing incident involving an outdated map, an unfamiliar trail and too little ground clearance. Mud in the intake is bad.

New car kind of bad.

I needed a new car, but wanted something that was A) cheap B) economical, and C) cheap.

After a short search, I found a 93 Honda Civic that fit the bill.

The little red rustbucket has been a great, economical answer for the amount of driving I do at work.

But I think I can do better.

Since I don’t have the money to do an electric conversion, I am trying to tweak my driving to get the most bang per three-buck gallon of gas. I’m using a number of the ideas mentioned at this website, and am tracking my mileage per tank versus what it was on year and one set of tires ago.

Last year, I would get about 250-275 miles per 7-gallon tank. So far, by watching my driving, I’m at 106 miles on 1/3 of a tank.

I’ll keep you posted on how many miles I get over the next week. In the meantime, have you tried to make your driving more efficient? If so, what are you doing?
