Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Forget Earth Day, do something every day

That’s the key message I hope people take out of all the Earth Day spinoffs- “green” has been the buzzword of the week, judging by what I’ve seen on TV.

If you haven’t been thinking about it, try to come up with something you can do, some little change that might cut back on the resources you use, or give back a little bit to beautify your area, wherever that is.

If you are doing something new, what is it?

One regular reader let me know about a program he and his wife completed last weekend with the Butler County Stream Team. They learned how to conduct water quality checks on local streams, lakes, etc, and he had some comments about our local bodies of water.

“Along these lines, I noticed the our local streams are currently choked with algae. This is due to the fertilizer runnoff from local landowners according to Saturday’s information. Well guess what, when this algae dies, it gets devoured by bacteria that deplete ALL the oxygen from the water. This kills off all the life in that stream.
I’m sure you’ve heard of “fish kills” - thats what causes it. lack of oxygen due to this effect. Homeowners are the worst stewards of our streams, over fertilizing basically. The farmers are much better about getting the right amounts so runoff isn’t catching excess.”

Something to think about.

So here are two ways you could get greener this summer: keep an eye on a stream (go to the Butler County Stream Team website for more on their program), or pay a little more attention to what you put on your lawn.

Either way, you’ll have one more excuse to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

I’ll have more on my own E-Day resolution tomorrow, but until then, let’s just say it has to do with something red, four-wheeled and, at the moment, full of old bike parts.
