Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Silver linings

After yesterday’s rant on the cost of fuel, I thought I should strike a balance with a more positive post today.

The effect of rising energy costs is something I still say we should all be thinking about, but let’s not just focus on the problem. I should’ve said more yesterday about the good old American ingenuity we can-and should-use to use to find solutions.

I want to hear about what you, your neighbors, or the business down the street is doing to save energy, save the environment, or help make life in the Cincinnati-Dayton corridor a little more sustainable. Do you have solar or wind generators at your home or business? Do you know someone who’s pioneered a greener way of doing something?

I found one company that I’ll mention in a story next week, but I want to hear about more. I know they’re out there; let me know what you know.

In today’s Pulse-Journal, there’s an article that mentions the “Recycle to Win” program BCDES is implementing to pay communities for recycling. It uses an “everyone’s a winner” kind of competition to fill recycle bins, and so far, it looks like West Chester’s dog can hunt. We’re in the lead for the first quarter of 2008, but only by a hair’s breadth.

As I don’t want to suffer the indignity of losing to my Liberty Twp. and Fairfield counterparts, let’s step it up, West Chester! Let’s blow our neighbors out of the water by year’s end on this!

Born in Piqua, raised in Huber Heights, world traveled. I find myself now living “off-the-grid” in an Earthship(house made of recylced tires, beer cans & bottles) in New Mexico. Bottom line, if I ever have to move back onto the “grid,” I would incorporate every possible aspect of this self sustaining lifestyle. There is no excuse, not to maximize the use of solar or wind energy, as well as water catchment systems into the conventional home. It is time to wean ourselves from the teat of the oil hog.

I know one business in the Union Centre area, West Chester is reaping substantial energy savings by using geo-thermal technology. The air inside is fresh and comforting. Recycling: I know of many good people in West Chester are recycling. Keep up the good work!
