Happy Earth Day!
Happy Earth Day!
Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…
So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?
Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?
A time to call for more action?
Or something in-between?
Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Bamboo socks!
Yes, you read that right. I’m wearing bamboo socks today. This is not as bizarre, or scratchy, as it might sound. Google “bamboo fabric” and you’ll come up with a list of manufacturers, retailers and devotees touting the green properties of this fast-growing fiber.
But does it live up to the hype?
From the lofty perch the Web affords us, you can find interesting discussions about the pros and cons of bamboo products. I found a discussion at Inhabitat that touches on some of these, such as shipping costs for Asian plant products and the land use and social justice implications of large scale bamboo farming. Read the comments, as they take interesting turns.
I wanted to get a more first-person perspective, and the chance presented itself when I was sock shopping this weekend. For a few extra bucks (about $3 per pair, compared to the $5 I spent for three cotton pairs) I scored a pair of 100% bamboo socks.
I’m wearing them as I type this.
They feel, well, like socks. Comfy socks, a little less fuzzy than cotton and less clammy than some synthetic socks can be. They claim to be antimicrobial, which I’ll find out after I ride home today.
Have you jumped on the bamboo bandwagon? I’ve heard it works well for sports/outdoorsy-type clothes - anyone have any experience? Is bamboo really a viable alternative for those of us looking for sustainable products?
