Threats at Lebanon High

On Wednesday, May 14, a Lebanon High School student made threats toward another student serious enough to land him in jail. School officials say their policy won’t let them disclose any details, like if there was a weapon involved or in what manner the threat was made. Is this a good policy, or should they be more open?

Yes they should definitly be more open. We need to know what our children are up against in a situation like this. Especially when you have children or grandchildren attending this school.

This is a stupid policy. The parents of students have a right to know what is going on in their kids school when it concerns their safety. I think the school should disclose all the information except for the name of the child accused. Lebanon schools need to do more to address the growing problem with teen suicide and school violence. This child needs help. All of our children need help. Don’t kid yourself into thinking this child is alone. Lets address the problem and not punish this child then hope all goes away. We need programs in the schools, metal detectors in the schools, counselors that really care about our kids and parent involvement. Come on people. Do we really want to wait until something horrible happens to take action.

The school should have an open policy on lettting the parents and community know what is going on in our schools. Our children go to them and we want them safe.Possibly adding more measures to assure safety is needed.

the policy is good. parents who are not involved in the situation should not be informed. the reason why is then everyone would be freaking out. metal detectors do not belong in school.

I agree-this is a stupid policy. Parents and students should know what the discipline measures are given to others for what they do. What-we dont want to embarrass the kid that threatened to shoot someone? I think society is too soft on the kids in this era. Now we have teachers and parents afraid of our own kids. There are no or very little consequences for what they do. I am glad my daughter chose to go to college for nursing and not teaching-it is awful to think this way but there are too many things to deal with now as a teacher-parents are one of them. Dont hurt my Johnny..if my Johnny was bad in school I would expect him to get disciplined at school but he would get nothing there compared to home. As a tax payer I want to know the adults are running the school not the students..The policy needs adjusted……Just MY opinion…

Kids do stupid things, thus the need for parents. I would guarantee everyone reading this post has a teen who has done something that they could nnot believe

Disclose any details? It is school administration practice of not disciplining students in the first place. If they concentrated more on this and not other items so trivial to disciplining students, the school image would start to improve even more. But, if you don’t discipline students when they deserve it, show them consequences for wrong behavior when they exhibit wrong behavior, this is what they get. Oh, I just figured it out. That is what school administrators do these days. Wait until the students do something so wrong that the police can just take care of it. So, then, they don’t have to discipline even more.

the school’s disciplining abilities today are limited compared to 20-30 years ago by blaming parents. Before you judge the school administration, be sure you seach you child what is acceltable behavior and the law. .

Totally be more open, for the safety of the community, and to continue to educate fellow students.

This whole article comes to no surprise to me. A boy made a threat to my daughter that he was going to get a gun and shoot her. She told the principal and nothing was done until I complained. Then the principal called and told the parents of the boy what was going on and who he threatened. The parents came knocking on my door and yelling at me because they had to go to the school for a meeting because my daughter told on their son. It was completely insane, the way this situation was handled. Parents, let this be an eye-opener for you. It can happen to your child. Lebanon School District stinks.

This goes beyond stupid. Parents need to know what is going on in the district, need to be aware when/if children are being threatened, and especially need to be able to have TRUST in the system. Sigh… I mean, come on, what is it going to take before the admins realize that sometimes the best medicine is PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE!!!

I kind of agree with the person who posted under “no.” I don’t see what good it would be to release details regarding the threat to the public. It’s reasonable to deduce that if the boy was sent to jail, the threat probably entailed a violent weapon or threat of rape. It’s not exactly rocket science. And, we must all consider that the boy is innocent until proven guilty. Releasing his name and other details may bring unnwarranted attention to his family. The accused have rights, too. HOWEVER, I completely disagree with the idea that metal detectors should be kept from school. They sound reasonable to me.
