Little Miami levy fails
The Little Miami school levy failed by a margin of 58 to 42 percent. What should the district do now? Can they pass a property tax levy in this economic climate, or should they try for an earned income tax again like they asked for in November?

I wish Mr. Bennett would place a big “THANK YOU VOTERS” on the sign outside the high school like he does when these things pass. I would love to thank all of those that voted no. By doing this, we are able to stay in our home. My wife and children would love to thank each and everyone of you that said “NO” to this tax. The older lady that lives next to us told us on the way to vote yesterday, if this passes, she have to chose between her medication or keeping her home. She also asked me to thank you all who voted no. i don’t think Mr. Bennett and the rest of the school board gets this kind of tax hurts people. I know they are looking for more money to get better pay like most big business do. Things are bad all over. Again, thank you who voted no.By Bob

Mr. Bennett should thank the voters for voting “No”? I guess that makes perfect sense to the backward thinkers of the school district. Yes, thank you for eliminating 83 jobs. Thank you for forcing the closing of 3 school buildings. Thank you for eliminating physical education, art and music classes. Thank you for no high school busing. Thank you for the state minimum required education my children will now receive. You’re right Mark, there is much to be thankful for and Mr. Bennett should thank the voters.By Scott

Good point Mark. So you are now able to stay in your home since you don’t have to pay the $1 or so a day to support the schools? I guess that makes me think you probably over extended yourself in your mortgage, thus being one of those who paid for something they could not afford, and like those who have done that, caused this great housing mess we are in. So Thanks to you! You obviously don’t realize that since this failed, the housing values around here will stay low. Hope you don’t need to refinance anytime soon. Also, for those “now able to stay in their homes” If you either smoke, drink, buy over priced coffee, drive a truck or big suv, I guess that is more important. Invest on the things that are actually important. If you voted NO, then you may not speak of “community, togetherness, helping out on another, love thy neighbor, etc” You are selfish! Plain and simple. If you don’t think so, ask yourself why you voted no and give yourself a truthful answer. Selfish! Me Me Me, It’s My Money! Let’s Tea Party!By Dave

You go Scott and Bob. You sound like teachers that lost money. This is all about making money for the schools (talk about me me me). These people have a right to vote no and being they did, that is fine. Maybe they drive an SUV, or buy over priced coffee, but it is their right like it is to vote no. The schools seems selfish by not taking the students to school. We are paying for that, and they stopped doing that. Who is selfish in this case (not me me me)? What else is the schools going to do to get even? They are the ones not for the community. See what the teacher’s union is going to get for them the time they have a contract in front of them. Look at all the money they make working 9 months a year. It seem the schools are the ones that are over extended here. There is nothing wrong with having state minimum requirements. The schools get money from the state. If you all are not happy with this, maybe there is a better way to fund schools other then property tax. Yeah, let’s have a tea party and change this.By Tom Quigley

I showed the treasurer at Little Miami how to save millions over five years on health insurance benefits and also sent an email to all of the board members and superintenden. I heard from no one except the treasurer who tried to make up excuses. I am author of the book “How To Beat The High Cost of Health Care”, I do not sell insurance. I work on what I save and have two school districts and about 5 cities using my strategy and they all wonder what is wrong with everyone.By Tina Scott

Tom, that is a nice thing you did, but the union for the schools will not let the schools do that. you see Tom, the schools are a business, a big business. they make money off the property owners like me and a lot of other people. they don’t care about saving us money, only making it. that way they can make more. did you see what the treasurer you e-mailed makes a year? i am shocked mr. bennett and the board has not gone to the Ohio courts to try and over turn the election. wait and see if there is not another election coming for more of our tax money. we need to get a vote going to stop funding schools with property tax. by doing so would stop this economic and education genocide we having going on. Dave from above has the right idea. there needs to be a sales tax or something else to fund our schools.By Kelly

Scott has it right, it is about the property values. No-one seems to get it, the only option you have in controlling the taxes you pay is by choosing where you live. So now that the short sighted people of area have voted down the tax levy for the schools, people will choose to live elsewhere and send the children to those schools. If you are truelly against taxes, take your fight to the state and feds, don’t pick on the kids and their schools because they are easy. You are all a bunch of cowards!By Ed

one way to control high taxes is by voting no, and most of the people did just that. it is the short sighted people and small minded people that get mad and upset when this happens. if the schools learned to do better with the money the state and federal government gives them, then you all would not be so upset and mad. ask why all the cuts are being made at the schools, and you will find out there is over staffing. staff members’ moms, brothers, sisters, dads, and so on being hired to do jobs. i see this is in most all state jobs. Kelly is right about one thing, if you are mad because the levy was voted down, take it up with the feds and state. tax all the people and not just those with property. the schools are the ones picking on the children. not picking them up for school when they go to the school is being a coward. the children know what is going on. the school tells them it is the no voters fault the parents have to take them to school. schools are a business, a big business. they are one of the top employers in warren county for full time jobs. like most big businesses right now, people are getting laid off. those poor people do not get to have a vote, they just get fired or laid off.By Tyme Forechange

It is time to move forward and replace Dan Bennett. It is interesting to note that the reason why we built new schools was because we needed more room. Now we are actually closing schools. It is also important to note that School Board member John Stern was successful in protecting his wife’s job in the school district even though he was a strong opponent to the levy. Some other thoughts: $96,000 salary for a wood shop teacher; that position was kept. Most music classes at the high school were maintained while important language arts classes such as creative writing was eliminated. Little Miami needs new leadership at the superintendent’s position and School Board members such as John Stern must go.By JJ

I agree that if Little Miami had got it right the first time they wouldn’t be in the mess they are in now. I voted yes for the new school, but the very next year they have trailers for the students. I will not vote yes again. They had the opportunity to get it right and failed. If the wages mentioned by Tyme are correct I will certainly vote NO! I think it would be great if some of these people would move away it has gotten out of control and with all the new housing you would think they would have plenty of money. My taxes are so high now it is just out of hand and the proprty values keep dropping. Perhaps the people with Children still in school should pay the higher taxes and leave us older people alone, we have paid our dues. Vote No and demand they take pay cuts to help the situation. 96000.00 a year for a wood teacher you must be kidding!By Jerry Burton

A solution is “simnple”! If you voted “yes” for the school levy you were prepared to pay $305 (per $100 K)Pay it to the school anyway? How many have paid?By wideawake

Mr. Burton poses a very legitimate point. Those who voted “yes” implied that they were prepared to pay.How many of those who voted “yes” have actually paid their implied commitment?
