Little Miami basketball fund-raiser
The Harlem Wizards, a tricks/performance basketball team, will play a basketball game against the Little Miami staff at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 2, in the Little Miami High School gym. The game is presented by the Little Miami High School Boys’ Basketball team. Tickets in advance are $8 for students and seniors and $10 for general admission. Tickets at the gate will cost $10 for students and seniors and $12 for general admission. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Reading with Raider
The Salem Twp. Public Library presents Reading with Raider, a program to help students improve their reading skills by providing a quiet, non-stressful setting where students read to dogs. The dogs will be at the library, 535 W. Pike St., from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 5. The program is sponsored by 4-H’s Clover Canines group. Bishop Fenwick spring play: Don’t Drink the Water
Bishop Fenwick High School presents a production of Woody Allen’s “Don’t Drink the Water” with three shows this weekend, beginning at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 1. Other shows are at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 2, and 2 p.m., Sunday May 3. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and children.

Fund-raiser for Leah Jordan
Another fund-raiser will be held for the 10-year-old daughter of a Little Miami teacher. Leah Jordan, whose mother Ellen teaches at Little Miami Junior High, is suffering from Leukemia. Leah’s teacher and classmates at Loveland Elementary are holding a carnival at the school from 4-7 p.m., Friday, May 1, to raise money for her treatments. Activities include games, a booth to throw pies at teachers, a karaoke station, face painting, food for sale, a bake sale and a raffled.

The Little Miami “Rhythms and Renderings” Fine Arts Festival takes place this weekend at Little Miami High School. Festivities are 5-9 p.m., Friday, April 24, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, April 25. Little Miami school board meets tonight
The Little Miami school board will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 21, in the high school media center. On the agenda is a presentation regarding the kindergarten plan for 2009-2010, as well as several contract negotiations.

Is “sexting” a problem?
Local and state legislators are proposing new laws regarding “sexting” - the taking and sending of nude pictures via cell phone. While at school, students in Mason and Middletown were recently caught with images on their cell phones. How big of a problem is sexting? What should school and law makers be doing to prevent it?

Project Excellence teachers named
The Area Progress Council of Warren County has named this year’s recipients of the Project Excellence awards, recognizing area teachers for their contributions to students. Project Excellence recognizes two teachers from each of Warren County’s school districts, one “Excellent” teacher and one “Innovative” teacher. One teacher is also selected from the Career Center and another from the Educational Service Center. The winners will be honored at a banquet Monday, May 4, at the Kings Island Inn and Conference Center. This year’s winner are: Carlisle Excellent: Carla Brown, first and second grade, Alden Brown Elementary. Innovative: Cindy Donathan, third grade, Grigsby Elementary. Franklin Excellent: Kristen Dursch, fifth and sixth grade math, Anthony Wayne. Innovative: James McFarland, history, Franklin High School. Lebanon FBLA holds dodgeball fund raiser
Lebanon High School’s Future Business Leaders of America are holding a dodgeball tournament at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 16, as a fund raiser for the A-T Children’s Project, which conducts research on ataxia-telangiectasia, a rare, genetic disorder that affects motor control and the immune system. Last year, the event raised about $2,000 for A-T.

Meet Bishop Fenwick’s new principal
Middletown Journal reporter Meagan Engle recently spoke to the new principal at Bishop Fenwick High School, Michael Miller. Miller replaces Cathie Mulligan, who has retired. Miller is a graduate of Chaminade Julienne High School in Dayton, where he has been the director of curriculum and instruction since 2007. He said Fenwick’s strong values and traditions attracted him to the school. “I’m excited for the opportunity to lead a great Catholic community,” he said. “It’s a real privilege and honor to be working with them.” Miller said it’s something he’s hoped for to serve with a group of people so dedicated to their school.

Career Center students succeed at NBPA
Ten students in Warren County Career Center satellite programs have qualified to compete at the National Business Professionals of America conference in Dallas, Texas this May. Students and the awards they won at the Ohio Conference are: • Ally Hueber, Little Miami, Business Tech, second place in Fundamental Word Processing Skills. • Andrew Evans, Little Miami, Information Technology, second place in Cisco Systems Administration. • Cameron Gurr, Springboro, first place in Digital Media Production. • Karah Albert, Springboro, second place in XHTML. • Craig Englebrecht, Springboro, second in Graphic Design Promotion. • Alysse Brubaker and Matt Maurice, Springboro, second in Software Engineering. • Alex Stephens, Springboro, second in PC Servicing. • Grant Joslin, Kings, first place in PC Servicing and Troubleshooting.

Affected by autism?
The American Academy of Pediatrics is partnering with several Warren County organizations to train doctors and provide more services for children with autism. The goal is to drastically reduce the time it takes to diagnose a child, and to give families more options for treatment, according to Dan Farkas of the AAP. In Warren County, Help Me Grow and MRDD, along with several doctors, are working to screen children and get them the help they need. If your child has autism and you would like to talk about your experience or any of the initiatives in Warren County, contact me at 696-4507.

Leah Jordan fund rasier
Another fundraiser for 10-year-old Leah Jordan, who is suffering from Leukemia, will be Wednesday, April 15 at at Abuelo’s Restaurant on Mason Montgomery Rd. At lunch and dinner, 20 percent of all sales will be donated to Leah, whose mother, Ellen Mason, teaches at Little Miami Junior High School. In addition, 50 percent of proceeds from all gift cards purchased that day will go to their family. Several other events, including raffles and split-the-pot, will take place. However, Leah won’t receive anything if patrons do not have a flyer, available by e-mailing Karyn Bailey at karynbailey@gmail.com.

Fund raisers to benefit cancer patients
Two fund raisers to support children with cancer will be held soon. The Butterfly Walk will be held Saturday, May 9, at Cottell Park in Deerfield Twp. A team is being assembled to support Leah Jordan, the 10-year-old daughter of Little Miami Junior High teacher Ellen Mason. Registration is $25. To sign up, go to www.butterflywalk.com and search for the team “Luvin’ Leah’s Luv.” The funds will go to Cancer Free Kids for pediatric cancer research. The other event is called the Rat Race and starts at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Nisbet Park in Loveland. Registration is $30, which includes a t-shirt and post-event party. The money will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Hospice of Cincinnati. Kids activities are available before and during the race. Leah’s team will be enter the “Fitness Walkers 5k.” For this event, participants who want to support Leah must register together by contacting Marcy at (513) 673-9288 or mkenny5@cinci.rr.com.
